Serin in a village. And a ton of vultures (possible lack but hard to tell as light behind). Up Puy du Dome. Apparently been reintroduced which is nice. They were huge. |

A second cuckoo of the year tonight - at the spot I heard my first a good decade back now. And yesterday, we had the flash of 2 beautiful kingfishers about a minute apart. Guess a breeding pair but I suppose may be young. |

Female redstart today. No sign of a male. I’m moving house next week and the new place has a much larger garden with a good mix of mature trees around it. I’m looking forward to seeing what birds come to visit. The present owner reckons there’s a kingfisher nesting under a small bridge over the river nearby. I’ll be checking that out. |

Black kites, buzzards and a red squirrel today. Merlin picked up a black woodpecker at a very unusual noise. Didn't see it though so can't be sure. |

Rosehip
There is a slightly slipped tile on our roof - at the corner and on a dormer so just about level with the bathroom window. Last year blue tits nested in the gap and whilst they were very noisy it was good to see them there and they successfully fledged a brood of 3. In the autumn we moved the tile back a bit and thought we'd filled the hole - to stop rain getting in rather than the birds. It must have slipped again. There is a VERY noisy and determined male house sparrow sat above the hole, shouting loudly that he has found the perfect nest site, fluffing himself up and generally showing off a bit. He's been there regularly for the last month at least, but sadly for him - and my morning lie in there is no sign of attracting a mate. Thinking about it, we usually see a lot more males about than females and now I'm wondering why that is. |
