Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I have just caused a mini riot in the office by using this expression (they're all de-mob happy for Christmas) and nobody but nobody believes that I didn't make it up.

Some other Fetchie must know this phrase, yes?

Nope, never heard it before and I've had a fairly broad cultural influence from the corners of the country over the years.

As DT says though, I like it :-)

Ness, where is your dad from? I wonder if it's one of those very geographically specific things?

In my usage, it's the equivalent of "do bears shit in the woods?" (ie of course they bloody do), whereas "like giving a donkey strawberries" seems to mean a waste, like throwing pearls before swine.

Never heard of it! Is it a regional one? My parents are from Devon, I was born and brought up in Liverpool and now live in Wakefield and haven't encountered this one...
