A predictable result and one I find disappointing.
However we gave the mandate now and I don’t see how Boris can turn down the request.
Actually I think he should suggest we have a referendum quite quickly. That way it’s done and out the way.

Agree. We’ve rolled through the arguments before let’s get the bloody thing over with with little delay. As I said in the politics thread 49pc to SNP and the Greens in the constituency vote we are completely divided down the middle I’m sure it’s not going to get distracting or another hinderance to us.
Do you think if we vote for Independence unionists will get to have another vote in 5 years time if we think the country will have changed its mind and don’t like what they voted for?

I just watched gove on sky and I had two main thoughts
1) he clearly wasn’t going to be drawn on what Boris will do if asked for a referendum. To be honest he cannot answer that question as whichever way he goes will lead to bad publicity.
2) there appeared to be the start of a conciliatory work together message. I suspect they realise there is a real issue and the old response will not Work
I don’t think we will have a referendum any time soon as it’s too risky for both sides.

Line that up for just after rUK votes on rejoining the EU JRitchie.
I agree with Scorge that the 'Unionist opposition' did another poor job, despite some seemingly effective tactical voting. More specifically the Tories did OK and Labour and the LibDems continued to be largely irrelevant.
On a more parochial level (as someone who knows the northern isles well) it did seem interesting that the SNP are gaining votes there where people traditionally are not keen to swap distant rule from London for distant rule from Edinburgh.

It was quite frustrating watching everyone dodge the big questions asked by sophy ridge including Keith brown.
In my mind much as I dislike it there is a mandate and if asked Boris should agree.

It would be to obvious master stroke for Boris to come out now and say this is clearly divisive for nation so sooner we resolve the better. Let's hold referendum in next 12 months.
Fair chance in that timeframe with a reasonable campaign it would result in another No and this time potential kill the issue for much longer time. SNP likely know this and will be part of reason they have to play a canny stalling game until they feel clearly some way past 50% supports.

It would also be a huge risk for Boris to take and not one he is going to take.
I listened to a podcast which quoted a stat that 1 in 5 No voters from 2014 are now voting SNP. That cant be correct given the actual split of votes. They then managed to find 8 of these people and they seemed to vote SNP because they like Sturgeons communication but they are not keen on Independence any time soon
I think the UK Government will be changing their approach and hoping that they can chip away while at the same time make sure the numbers mean that SNP need to be careful in timing. We may not see a referendum in this Holyrood term and that in itself could see a change in the landscape.

A lot of people seem to be assuming that everyone that votes SNP wants independence, whereas there will be an unknown ( but perhaps not trivial ) number who think Sturgeon has done well in running the devolved areas, and therefore voted SNP, but they are happy with the status quo and would vote to remain in the union.

There are also a lot of Labour supporters who support independence. Clearly many now vote SNP but some still vote Labour.
It's complicated!

Is it less of a risk than denying a referendum for next few years and further alienating sections of the country though Baz?
