Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I think I had a cheap copy of "Owzthat", as mine was styled "Howzat" and came in a plastic tube with no coloured lettering. :-)

I took nurdiness up a further level by working out a game with one standard dice rolled multiple times to give options that closely mimicked the real chances in a game. Different decision trees were used for defensive, attacking and tail end batsmen.

Whiled away many an hour on car journeys. I played a fair chunk of a season once, all I remember is that Sussex were really good and John Barclay was Bradmanesque.

Once I got a ZX80 I write it up as a Basic program that would produce a scorecard. Didn't work so well in the back of the car though!

Armchair Cricket was a game I enjoyed. I forget the precise details now but basically bowling and batting 'side' each held six cards, each card played by the bowler had to be countered by the batsman, but best of all you had proper ball by ball scoresheets to complete!

I spent hours in the 70s playing both Owzthat and Subbuteo Cricket. On poor days during school holidays I would frequently take over the dining room table for the duration of the day to play full blown test matches with the latter. I developed a way of succesfully playing it solo to negate needing to find some else willing to spend all day playing it. Owzthat went everywhere with me at one stage and I used it to pass many a long car journey. We had a camper and when travelling I had access to a table which helped make it feasible.

I used to play solo Subbuteo cricket too, I had a sheet of hardboard to which the pitch would adhere when smoothed onto the rough side, and the England, Australia and West Indies teams. My England side were far more successful than the real life version, for some reason!
