Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

I've heard similar WW. It was I'm told (and stated by JK in his blog) that at M-i-T the support all thought it was game over. Nobody could really see how he could realistically continue very far given how he looked and the lack of food intake. One tough exceptional guy.

Gus - how's the s'sheet coming along?

I have a full list of target / actual times now if you need them. Seems like Mike was around 2:20 behind his schedule at ca 200 miles, coming back to 1:40 at the end.

Happy to post them up but perhaps you've had enough now...

I chatted to him the other night, in the nicest possible way he was jokingly bemoaning the fact that 'the whole was is bloody paved now' and that he would have been 2 hours faster if he'd have been able to see where he was going in in the dark 'stupid bloody torches in those days'!! :-)

He also mentioned that Mike Cudahy missed much of his support leg on his coast-to-coast record 'never would have happened nowadays now everyone has bloody GPS & mobile phones'.

It's all light hearted - I don't want to give the wrong impression, he's happy for the records to go...

It's definitely changed quite a lot WW. I always think that when people bemoan the mobile coverage (or lack of) in Wasdale when doing BG support. When I started on BGs in the early 90s you just headed to your changeover for the appropriate time and waited. And hoped if they dropped out someone would come and tell you because no one had mobiles. At the best you might have someone manning a telephone at home and acting as a relay point for updates who you could call from a payphone. Kit has changed beyond belief in terms of weight, suitability, effectiveness and availability. And that's before you get to the paving etc. The slabs can be a bit of a double edged sword but in general at this time of the year they are much quicker than even the dry peat Mike had and they show you the way very clearly, even in the dark/poor vis.

I never got started, full of good intentions, then something else got my attention, then I went for a wee run..... ;-)

Damo seems to be crushing this section - he had 2 hours in his schedule, and he's got less than 2km to go after 1:10. Hope he's not overstretching himself, but he's got tons of experience so hopefully not

Wow! He's ripped up the section along The Wall. Nearly 2 hours up now. At this rate he will be close to Castle Nook before he loses the light which will be a bonus. It will make the micro nav so much easier through the boggy bits in that section.

You might need to think in terms of a good session rather than a single pint!

Forecast isn't great for tomorrow. Neither him or JK have really been blessed with the weather.

Thanks for the insights and although I was brought up on analogue my adult life has been digital (gen x). The routes are still a long way whatever kit you’re wearing!
