One of his nails on that foot is black - but he has a few black nails and has done for a long while, they've not seemed to bother him. It's the leg that has the plate in his elbow. That's been in 9 1/2 years though and again rubbing the elbow doesn't result in a stop it growl and nip, so I don't think that's the issue.
