I did something similar for the whole week, apart from the steps back. I just stood and waited, then we moved on when the lead was loose and he was beside me. At the beginning shovelling cheese in while the lead remained loose. Took 2 hours to get to somewhere 23 mins walk away (according to Google) at one point, but we cracked it after an intense week. Hope the owners are keeping it up. Hardest part is training them I find!

- There is something about black labs LD, Ralph is very difficult with boy black labs, but as you may have noticed he's fine with the ladies
- he only knows lady black giant schnauzers and lady black GSDs, so I don't know how he would react to the boys - but I have read that there is something about a black lab's face that makes other dogs unable to read their intentions.
I spent 3 years doing the stop and two paces backwards when Ralph pulled on the lead - it has had no effect whatsoever - if he wants to go faster or investigate something, it doesn't matter what I do he will pull me there to do it
I have found that "this way" said in a very Barbara Woodhouse higher-pitched voice gives me back some control.
Bedroom doors are kept shut and sofas - apart from one cosy chair are out of bounds. Hotel room beds, however, are a completely different kettle of fish

Another "I'm scared of black labs so I'm going to react to them" here in Indi. I wonder if its cos they can be quite full on? As everyone has said you are doing a great job Maz, it is exhusting especially when your dog appears to hate you. Its also hard to be the grown up too! Indi kills tree branches when he cant get his own way and sometimes he runs at me and punches me with an open mouth, I have the bruises to prove it. I'm assuming both of these behaviours is because I have not properly explained what I'm expecting or i have not been consistent and he is confused.
However, its amazing how much crap parenting they will forgive us for. I always try to remind myself of this - our dog is a big part of our world along side family, work and other responsibilities but we are the whole of our dog's world.

On the beach today, I saw a black Labrador dribbling a full-size football with legs and chest. So pleased was the dog that it rewarded itself with a roll in the sand!
Made me smile - gave me a blog topic too.

Jet is fixated on border collies when they are doing agility. He gets very excited and has a loud squeal that takes people by surprise. I sometimes have to cover his eyes so he can't see them.
I don't think we know any black labs.

One theory with black labs is that dogs (with their generally poor eyesight), struggle to make out their expression and can't always read their facial and body language so err on the side of apprehensive.
There's research with wrinkle-faced dogs too that indicates similar. Dogs can see them as frowning/screwing up their face growling style.

Wanda has also been wary of black labs in the past although has improved with those she knows. Our first trainer said it was also a 'black dog' thing - I think she thought it wasn't breed specific and it is because it is harder for dogs to see their eyes.

Our walk tonight will be early and short. QP doesn’t want to go climbing because he’s worried about the dog being alone. Bless him.

Tuss is asleep at the side of me. We have the radio on loud (Radio 2) hoping it’ll mask the sound of any fireworks
