I suppose the bigger birds might prick some latent 'retrieving' instinct in her, whereas the smaller ones don't.

He’s pretty good at ‘despatching’ his toys, but I’ve noticed he doesn’t shake them the way his mate Freddie (sproker spaniel) does, and the few times he’s had the chance to catch an already injured bird he’s given a good impression of total panic, dropped it and run away. Basically there’s a reason why he lives with me in Hampshire now instead of in Seville with a Spanish farmer: He’s defective.
