Nope nope nope nope nope. 9 is awful. 7 is great (and got me into JRPGs), despite dying SO MANY TIMES against Guard Scorpion in my early days due to that mistranslation.
6 is the end of the f***ing world. The fact that Kefke completes his evil plan knocked me sideways, and Ninja's perma-death was more keenly felt than Aerith's swansong.

Perhaps I've got 9 and 8 muddled up. Which was the TFH one with the boss battle that had one of your team strapped to the bad guy's chest? Thought that was 8?

And perhaps I've got 6 and 5 muddled up. I can check both these things. Wait 5.

I got 9 and 8 muddled up. Struggling to answer the other question. Perhaps it was 5 I hated - only played one pre-7 and hated it.
While I'm getting these JRPG 3 things off my chest I shall say I thought Chaos Rings 3 was a crushing disappointment.

TFH? Never played 5 so not sure.
6 - originally on SNES, large cast of characters versus Kefke, evil clown villain, ends the world. 7 - PSX, Cloud makes up stories to make you chase tragic villain Sephiroth across the world 8 - bonkers plot involving amnesia and time travel, Ultimecia the big boss from the future 9 - swords and sorcery, Zidane and little Black Mage, got bored before finding out who the big bad was 10 - terrible voice acting, terrible final boss, but still great.

We used to play an arcade game called (IIRC) Crush Roller. It was a direct ripoff of Pac-Man except you had to paint the maze with your roller and not get caught by the cats (instead of ghosts).
