Ah, wee beastie, sorry hadn't looked at your times/paces - 1:15 half, wow!
Might need to try some of the speedies in the sub 3 hr marathon thread for how to step up to "raced" ultras. I genuinely believe there are huge differences in how one would approach these things.
A 50km (31 mile), and possibly even up to 40 or 50 miles flat ultras can be approached in many ways like a marathon. Total mileage, plus speed work, including endurance speed etc.
_andy has done a 5:4x Clydestride, top 10, he's still active on Fetch. Best of luck and enjoy! G

My plan is to do lots of walking too, especially when the weather gets better and we're allowed to travel a bit further to walk somewhere nice/hilly Also lots of walk practicing with poles if you plan on carrying them

Agree Rosehip, need to practice if using poles.
No poles in Clydestride. Not allowed in Scot Athletics permitted races, I don't think. G

I just wish the usual LDWA challenge events were going to happen, I really enjoyed the two I did early last year - despite the mud - and two or three this spring would have been perfect training.

COMing back to the earlier point, FWIW I've never been a big fan of back-to-back long runs says for the sake of it. I'll happily do back-to-back long days if I'm in the mountains for a weekend as then they're long days for their own sakes, however I'm not sure they're the best training unless you're looking at a multi-day stage race. My preference (when I trained properly ) was to fit in one big day a month of at least 30 miles and preferably 40 or longer. This could either be an event or just a long day, but if an event it would be about completion rather than going hard so the recovery wasn't an issue.
If family or other constraints mean you can't take a whole day out for a training run then back-to-backs are probably the next best thing.

That's interesting flanker. I did quite a few for my 100 milers, 38+38 being my biggest, quite a few 25+20. No way I could have done 76 in one go as training! But I did do some 40s ad 50s as training too. I agree in principle, the one, longest run is always better, but for both injury avoidance and just fitting it into life, breaking things into a couple of chunks over a weekend seems an obvious strategy?

It would be nice if there were some 50ks happening in May/June, but can't find much suitable at the moment. There's a Wendover 50K night run I have my eye on (Centurion event) but it's a week or two later than ideal

The beauty for me of back to back days is you’re training the second day on tired legs. Run Saturday and do what you can on Sunday is what I’ve done (and will be doing again this year)
