AlanR, sorry for delay in answer, just got them yesterday, in the end. Went for middle to long distance which have a softer plate and a *wee* bit of cushioning. Local running shop had a few for sale and the ones that fit and felt comfy were Asics HyperEndurance. £23. Came with 6mm spikes. Bought a set of 12mm spikes for winter X country too. Hopefully they'll do for both. Roll on The Mile! Thanks again all for your help.

Argh! Anyone got any idea what to do with a "flat spike" on a seven spike Asics track shoe?! 6 x 6mm spikes + 1 x flat thing and 7 holes! No instructions - it may be totally obvious and I'm being dumb, but the shop didn't know, and are going to have to ask the manufacturer. I thought they all had 6 spikes?!

Anyone running in any of the Southern Womens or Southern Mens league matches this weekend? I'm traipsing over to Lee Valley in Tottenham for mine and Gobi's down in Bournemouth.
I'll no doubt be doing the 1500/3000 double again and await to see what else I'll be roped into doing...

Grrr, the flat spike should go at the rear in the middle of the spike plate. I assume it's a spare space for a little extra grip if required.

Rach - I'm running in a joint (SML & SWL) match at the weekend. 5000 and 1500 but hopefully jogging round as easily as possible for the points - in a hard training phase at the moment.
As for spikes, I've been using the Nike Miler from 1500m to 10,000m. Wouldn't recommend them to others for anything over 3000 as they have quite an aggressive spike plate and little / no cushioning. I find them most comfortable though - probably because it's basically the same shoe (apart from the sole) as my super-light trainers.
There are some interesting new spikes coming out this summer. Nike is releasing the 'Victory' spike which is their first one under 100g whilst Adidas have designed what basically looks like a racing flat with spikes (http://www.shoeguide.co.uk/media/main/adidas_cadence_spike.jpg) to offer the protection of a road shoe with the extra grip of spikes. Mr Haille has already worn them for a sub 27min 10,000m race, so can't be all that bad.
On placement of spikes, I make do with 4 (don't see the point of any more and some distance shoes with non-removeable spikes only come with 4 anyway) and placed them in the most comfortable places for me. Actually ended up with a slightly different configuration for each shoe due to the way my feet land on the bends.

So the results of the 400m race I did on the 18th June are now up on the website, 58.99, so that has to be put down as a 58 on Fetch hasn't it...

I'd personally put that down as a 59, Slickster. I've run a 36:58 10k and tell people I run 37 minutes, so fair's fair...!
Hope your races went well JEJ. I was able to "jog" my 3000m very easily for a win and I was second in my 1500m (without having to work very hard). The other clubs didn't really have any distance runners (apart from the whippet in the 1500).

As ever, thanks everyone Boab, martin run, JEJ, for your help. Shop said it's down to personal preference, to allow the runner to self-configure. I suppose that makes sense. 6 spikes in any of 7 positions and 1 blank to keep the dirt out of the spare hole! Thanks again fetchites!
