Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

Do you duo? LINGO that is.

Where is the otter?

[Welsh has a really cute word for otter, dyfrgi, which translates as 'water dog'. Awwww

JCB, so you're saying that they are using essen instead of fressen for animals in Duolingo? Generally speaking, that's not very common. As a native speaker of Germany, I normally use fressen when I talk about animals eating something.

This said, there is a tendency to use essen when speaking about what pets eat as opposed to animals in general. E.g. commercials for pet food would use 'essen' or Nahrung = nutrition instead of Futter (food) when they advertise their brand-new dog food formula or something like that. I have noticed that pets are treated more like people in these contexts so that their owners get the impression that the company takes the well-being of their pets seriously. So it could also be more common for pet owners to use the words associated with humans because that's what they hear.]

Dylan's relatives don't like parsnips.

[*follow-up to the above: stupid autocorrect, it added an unwanted -y at the end of German and I was too invested in writing the comment to notice 🙄]

[Thanks tipsku. That could be the context, as, if I remember correctly, it was referring to dogs and cats.

The added y still actually makes sense. 🙂]
