Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

A quick cursory check against a postcode where I have an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) declared for PM10 exceedances against the national air quality objective levels.

I have 1 x PM10 analyser and 1 x PM10/2.5 on-site (each monitor uses a different technique), co-located with 2 x PM10 analysers operated by the local quarry.

The tool is WAY under-reporting both PM10 and PM2.5

Similarly just reviewed a few areas that correspond with our NO2 monitoring sites. Again, utter guff.

An article on the webtool. Whether or not it is completely accurate, building peoples awareness of air quality is a good thing surely?

I found it interesting that only 1/3 of emissions from flying are from CO2.

Badder, and in different ways. Yip! (Guess I suspected that, in same way that diesel particulates have health consequences for humans at ground level too, over and above CO2 and the climate! But hey, Facebook trolls keep saying, yeah, but your electric cars contain cobalt mined by child slaves in the DRC. Yes, also bad, but so does the phone/computer you are typing your trolling on. Let's fix that too. But not by driving diesel/petrol cars!) :-) G

Stop flying so frequently you say? Hmm. I've been banging that drum for some time.

To be fair, cars (although cumulatively worse) are small beans compared to flying (or the potential impact of flying).

More importantly. bbc.co.uk

Why I have refused to replace my perfectly servicable 19 year old laptop!
I had to replace my phone in 2020 because the old one's RAM memory had become too small for its upgrades 🤬

Is dark mode better for the environment?
Yes, by turning your device into dark mode, you are playing a small role in slowing climate change. In case you're not aware of what dark mode is, it's when your device displays bright text over a dark background, as opposed to dark text on a light background.24 Jul 2020

Is Dark Mode Good for the Environment? - EarthPlex - Climate ...

Fetch has just launched Dark Mode (Darth Mode, he has called it, in his inimitable style!)

Of course, just turning off all of our devices more often would be best, but if they are on and you are using the screen, dark mode could save a small amount of energy.

I am considering it! :-) G

Bottom of every page there is a drop down. If it's all red and yellow in Fetch for you then it probably says "Default Skin"

Just below where it says Units: Miles

Kilometres

Lots of different colours you can choose from. :-) G

Your regular reminder that nuclear power is the only form of energy generation that has a negative cost learning curve.

It gets more and more and more expensive. Not less.

bbc.co.uk

And that Hinckley C is the most expensive method of generation ever.

About This Thread

Hi
I've seen environment (whether emissions, power, climate change, access to countryside, whatever you think of as "environment") discussed in various threads: Politics (obviously), the Electric Car thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/electric-car-anyone-61481/ , run free's excellent "Competitive Running and Keeping The Environment Clean" fetcheveryone.com/forum/running-competitively-keeping-our-environment-clean-60907/ my own Greta Thunberg thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/greta-thunberg---jfk-for-the-climate-generation-61044/ etc. but I haven't seen a general one.

So here it is. For those interested in the science, the politics, the action for (and I'll state that for me, this is mostly pro-environment, anti-emissions, anti-pollution etc.) and the hope for the future of our planet.
