Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

NVivo sounds a bit more advanced than my series of tables organised under broad headings with a brief synopsis of each paper. I am at the 'holy shit I have more than 100 papers to read and make sense of' stage. Working out how they all fit together will come in time I imagine.

I've just realised that I've cited 263 papers/chapters in my lit review chapter :-O

I don't remember reading some of the papers!

Blimey! I guess 100 is only a starting point. I haven't completed my lit search yet. It seems like a mammoth task but I am sure I will get there.

Web of Science/Knowledge is lethal. I would find a useful reference, check to see who had cited the useful reference, and end up with loads more useful references.

I have been looking at the history of water resources management in the UK. It is a huge topic.

I have to say I found web of knowledge terrible for my area compared to some of the other databases. I suppose some are better for different disciplines etc.

I found Google Scholar really useful for some of my older (pre-1950) references.

I probably had about 100 for my Msc and actually used 50ish, it didn't require anything fancy other than Endnote and a bunch of mindmaps. Literature searches are actually never-ending, when you think you have the major papers in the area you just find there is another area which abuts that area and you have to go off and do it all over again. Google Scholar alerts are handy, I haven't set up any in other databases.

I did a broad sweep and just saved anything that looked even remotely relevant - it was difficult to read anything whilst the boy was on holiday. I'm sure half of the 100 odd will be useless. The boy is away this weekend so I have 3 days to blitz some work - I intend to finish my methodology and get on with my analysis.

And yes I realise that I probably should have done a lit review before I started my research.

I was made to produce a research proposal and lit review before my supervisor would accept me as a student.

I'm thanking him for it now although I didn't at the time!
