I used to never run in the rain. Hated the idea. But then I kept going out for a run when it was not raining and got rained on anyway and found out it was not so bad - nicely cooling and, let's face it, you're going to get wet anyway, just from perspiration. So I do sometimes voluntarily run in the rain now. Tuesday was a mistake, though. I should have still ruled out running on the basis that HEAVY rain and big puddles, strong wind and low temperatures do not make for a fun run. Ever.

I always have the problem of not being able to see in the rain, because of my glasses. I think that's one reason I tend not to do it. And I seem to hardly ever get rained on, possibly because I'm a real wuss if I think rain is possible. But it does mean that sometimes I don't run when I really should. So how can I overcome the block? |

I have the glasses thing, wearing a cap helps keep the rain off a bit. Erm, JFDI? You just need to change your attitude towards it really, tell yourself how lovely it is being out in the elements or some such sentiment. Most people do kind of dread going out when it is raining, but once you're out it soon becomes fun! |

And get yourself a decent lightweight running jacket - it will keep some of the wind chill off - being soaked to the skin is not the end of the world but if it's windy you will start to feel cold, and a jacket will help.

I'm a bit of a fair weather runner. A bit of drizzle is OK but not a rain shower. Although come race day, you have to run whatever the weather! I generally don't mind sub-zero temperatures either (I always run in shorts and not leggings) but I hate coming home with cold hands (depite wearing gloves) and the pain that comes with thawing them out!

That's actually a good point, Phil. You can't guarantee weather on race days, best to train in all conditions so you don't get completely thrown by weather you've never run in. It helps to think 'ooh, I'm so tough, I run in weather so bad my neighbours look at me like I'm crazy for even going outdoors in without a wetsuit'. Having said that, I didn't go out in the wind last week cos I didn't fancy being hit by bits of flying tree...

lazydaisy do you have a recommendation for a decent jacket? I could quite easily be tempted to buy a new piece of kit... AngusClydesdale recommended a Gore on the previous page.

Drell, I've found that providing you're not on the fells, any jacket (even a crap Sports Direct one) will provide sufficient protection, on the proviso you keep running!

dare2b.com I have this, it says water repellent rather than waterproof, but has kept me dry enough in some downpours! Cheap, does a good job, my dh has one for tennis and he loves it too. |

Love running in the rain, if it's warm I just run in a tshirt, come winter I'll always wear a jacket which while it won't keep the rain out does keep me warm. Bizarrely I still try and avoid the puddles.
