Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

RIP Steve Wright

We were always a big radio family, Dad always had the radio on, and i loved Steve Wrights show from first hearing him on 210, our local station.

Followed him through R1 breakfast show and afternoons - his high point for me, and then into R2.

I've spent quite a lot of my working life driving around, and he's been with me all the way.

I/m unbelievably sad to hear this news.

RIP Steve and thanks for such a great ride.

Ask Elvis was brilliant. Always remember when we were driving around in the car laughing when it was on and you could tell all the other drivers were listening to it at the same time with their big grins too 😁

RIP Steve

One of our favourite things was Sunday Love Songs. My good lady listened to it every week and she will miss Wrighty’s wit and comedy. RIP Steve. You brought a lot of joy to a lot of people.

Have Steve Wright to thank for introducing this gem to me. Can remember him being the afternoon companion from 80’s more or less through to current day. Sad news indeed.

Was quite emotional hearing Sarah Cox and Jo Whiley breaking down while talking about him. Listened to Steve and the posse on R1 after school, I have R2 on at work so he’s been the soundtrack to the afternoon for years. Only listed to Pick of the pops on Saturday while in the car and thought it was perfect for him.

I did feel his format was getting a bit tired and it was time for a change so wasn’t too sad when Scott Mills took over, but it’s still a loss.

His 'posse' gave depth and variety beyond the spinning of discs. Yes, some of the sketches were simple, childish even but wasn't everyone grateful for a chance to smile and laugh? Mr Angry still rings true today - but it's Steve's longevity and the high regard in which he was held by peers and listeners alike that will abide.

Echo what Meglet says about getting emotional hearing Sara Cox and her colleague Bobby Pryor pretty much in tears during the show. It must have been so so difficult for them as they clearly didn't know much sooner than when it was announced. Even the newsreader sounded shocked reading it out at 5.

I do also agree with Meglet that his afternoon show had run its course but I'm glad they kept him on the station and gave him Pick of the Pops.

In the 1980s he was an absolute must-listen. I don't really remember a time of listening to the radio in my lifetime when he wasn't on.

I came of age to Steve Wright in the afternoon on Radio 1. I guess I'm off the age now where losing the people who made my memories of growing up is inevitable. 🙁
