I've finally caught up with this week after only managing a single on Monday instead of the planned double. Just added the odd mile here and there to a few other runs. Up early tomorrow for a 13, then going to do Saturday's run on Friday night, and bring my long run forward to Saturday, so I can get plastered at a party on Saturday night and not have to worry about a run on Sunday. Heading for 85 miles for the week if all goes to plan. |

Thanks to Bazo for mentioning that Pete Pzitzinger of P&D fame was being interviewed on marathontalk.com Really interesting to hear him answer some of the readers questions that I had had myself, and his thoughts on what he would change in the schedules in a new edition, and how to get more out of the schedules without increasing the mileage. Things to think about : a) do a strides session every week, rather than once every 2 or 3 weeks - he places a lot of importance on strides to get the leg turnover moving. b) the Mid-week Long Run is most important in conjunction with the Long Run c) For the Tempo ( or LT ) runs, if you find them quite easy, add a mile or 2 to the fast part, ie if plan is 9 with 5 at Tempo, then do 9 with 6 at Tempo There's a 5k to Half Marathon book coming out in late 2014 |

Followed P&D's 55-70 schedule with some minor tweaks, which served me well and delivered 2 x sub 3 marathons. In my opinion the recommendation of the midweek Long run was the key for me.

Couple of other things I've just remembered : a) He rates hill training and would include more ( some ?? ) of that, though he didn't say how often, or how much b) Regarding current MP/HMP versus target MP/HMP - he says the tempo ( ie HMP ) sessions are harder than the MP sessions, so in the early days of the plan you may need to do the tempo runs at current HMP and improve this as you go through the plan, whereas you should be aiming for target MP in all the MP runs |

The MP bit was interesting as I always struggle to hit those early on..... The only point not addressed was races being on a Saturday - would be good to know how hw would re-structure the week around Sunday races |

Merry Christmas & Happy NewG(rrr)
Ah, good stuff guys, thanks. Re hills, P&D always said if your target race was hilly, like Boston, then include hills, otherwise, no specific advice. Would be interesting if they could suggest where they should be incorporated - in long runs, in specific sessions, as part of general runs (where pace matters less) etc. And I always found tempo tough at quicker than HMP at start. Glad that's what he found too! Quite enjoyed MP in long runs though! :-)G |

21 wet and windy (does it need saying?) miles done to complete biggest week so far, 68 miles. Although in terms of tiredness I feel like I have run that far and 230ish for January so far can honestly say I have never felt stronger.

All been a bit quiet in here, guess it's all been in the sub 3:30 or 3:15 or 3 etc threads A bit late in the day, but a question on tapering :- The P&D plans ( up to 55, 55-70, 70-85 ) all do their final MP run ( 14 miles as part of a longer run ) 5 weeks before the marathon, then no more MP runs ( apart from 2 miles as part of a dress rehersal on the Wednesday preceding the marathon ). Lots of people ( I guess not following P&D ) are doing quite a lot of MP sessions in the final few weeks, to get the body used to the pace. Seem to be shorter sessions, maybe 4 or 6 miles as part of a MLR. Do people think the P&D plans are lacking in shorter MP sessions in the final weeks ? They do have the longer reps at 5k pace ( 100m, 1200m, 1600m ) and some strides. I've only 2 weeks to go to my marathon, and considering doing a MP session this week, but at the same time a bit wary of straying from the plan. Saw what looked a good session to stay sharp in a taper - 4 at MP, then 4 at HMP I guess the answer's going to be it doesn't really make much difference what you do with less than 2 weeks to go ![]() |

I agree Gus....I have stuck in 2 extra MP sessions into my plan 10 miles yesterday (3 weeks out)which I think replaced a general or easy run with strides and same again next Saturday (2 weeks out)when the plan called for an 8-10k race. I figure that I will benefit more from trying our my PMP and also it replicates a Hal Higdon plan from which I PBd where I did MP every Saturday so that my LR was on tired legs. |
