Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

I realise this is a big ask but I need a flat route in Sheffield! I need at least a mile loop so that I can run my MP miles on something flat. There doesn't seem to be anything even remotely unhilly near where I live (Crookes). Ideally need something I can run in the dark after work but can run in the morning if it's a route that needs daylight. I know hills are good for me but for this one session I need a flatter route.
Thanks for any advice.

I lived in Crookes many many years ago, I think Rivelin Valley Road and Holme Lane was flattish. You've got to head for the rivers :)

good luck, lived there for 18 months and every run i did involved a hill, saying that you could go run down somewhere in don valley its pretty flat down there..say between the stadium and meadowhall..or laps of endcliffe park which isnt pancaske flat, but as flat as you can get in Sheffield.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll give those routes a try. I know the hills are going to do wonders for my running (just keep repeating 'hills are my friend....hills are my friend...').

Sheffield, one thing in common with Rome .....it's surrounded by seven hills !

I was also going to suggest Rother Valley Country Park .

Rivelin Valley Rd is flat, so is the Don Valley - Don Valley bowl might be a reasonable location for reps if memory serves, Endcliffe Park is also flat.

Also Abbeydale road is flat.

Hillsborough Park is relatively flat and big enough for mile reps.

Will think about some other places.

I did my MP reps and runs on the track (which is easily the best place - is Woodburn Rd open yet?) or just on bumpy (not hilly roads) - I don't think pancake flat is always necessarily necessary for MP stuff - most Marathons, even if they're flat, aren't pancake flat (London isn't for example)

NM - from Crookes you've got a few nice options but you will have to do a little bit of uphill/downhill to get to anywhere flat in Sheffield.

The two flattest parts of Sheffield are the valley bottoms - Don Valley (Brightside Lane/Attercliffe Rd/The Canal - generally industrial) or Penistone Road (out to Hillsborough then Middlewood Road out towards Oughtibridge). Both very flat, big pavements/cycle-paths, well-lit, easy to create loops, but pretty boring.

Another option is Fulwood Road and Ecclesall Road - much nicer scenery, well lit, less traffic etc. You could do out and backs but I think loop(s) would be nicer.

But my favourite, would be to drop down to Malin Bridge, then head out to Damflask reservoir via Loxely Road. The street lights stop about halfway so it's either a daytime route, headtorch or wait a few months til it brightens up - but it is a very good route. It's basically the Percy Pud route.

Damflask has both a trail path and road around it that are pancake flat - but as I say you will need to tackle the hilly bits to get there (unless you drive), but I always liked the decent to malin bridge, then the climb up Loxley (as a warm-up) before hitting the flat bit - which is about 8 miles in total, or Damflask is a nice 3 mile loop.

:)

And before people ask, yes, Loxley valley is where Robin of Loxley aka Robin Hood was born. :)
