Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

This WHR is doing my head in.

I've a marathon in a little over 2 weeks, and have only just stumbled accross this thread and the useful infor in it.

I've been working that my aerobic HR was roughly 140 bpm based on an old Mark Allen article, so have done a lot of training, runs into work, etc. at around this rate or lower. I think this has left me reasonably well trained aerobically.

BUT looking at this, and my heart rate range - Resting 40bpm MHR 205bpm

gives me 163.75 as 75% WHR. Is this right? Until now I thought the best I could achieve for the marathon is 145-155 bpm, I rarely go over this in my long runs and this is tricky to hold for more than 10 miles.

If I 'upped' this to 163.75-172bpm as the 75-80% WHR I'd be looking at some serious paces for a marathon that I just simply haven't trained anywhere near to.

Bit of context, my run home yesterday was around 150bpm and I was hitting 6:40 per mile on the flat bits, better on the downhills, and I'm aiming for a 3:00-3:15 marathon - Prob shoot for a 3:00 :-)

I've been questioned on my MHR a few times but I have seen this on at least 5 sprints at the end of 5km runs and a few on hard interval sessions.

Am I under training?

What sort of marathon HR should I go for? 150bpm seems low, but it will be a challenge to maintain based on my training.

At this stage (under 2 weeks to go), forgetting all the theory, tapering nicely then toeing the start line with a clear head would be my advice.

Hi (again ;-) Brunski.

I wouldn't change anything now - you can't change your training and your state of fitness for a marathon 2 weeks away; so my advice would be forget about it now, run the race to pace, and then think about HR afterwards.

From I what I have seen of your training, I don't think I would initially have faith in the figures you have anyway. They seem to be all over the place.

Don't stress about this now - come back in a couple of weeks time....

Good call saint

Definitely don't want a huge plan change now.

Come back after :-)

Everybody is different and I'd suggest that altering your race day strategy based on some theoretical numbers in the face of your prior experience and self-knowledge would be ill-advised. Well, totally barking, really ;-).

Try a HM in three or four weeks at ave 175 bpm and see how that goes: at least it wouldn't be so far to the end if it all went wrong.

Ha ha Paul, I'm like a bad penny, desperate to get any last bits of advice ;-) yeah my hrm is a bit temperamental but when it works I know and may be just an indication of what I'm up to.

Agree with everyone really, that I could do without ballsing it up with some half baked, not tested 26 ,lies in heart rate territory I've barely been in. I might have my last 10 mile plus run on Sunday at a touch over 155, maybe Upto 160 and just get a feeling for whether it is the sort of effort I could maintain over a longer distance.

If anything finding this really excites me as I've not really trained myself to push as hard as maybe my heart could handle....But I know what I'm feeling like after a 10 mile run at approaching 150bpm and I don't really feel like I could do that for another 16 miles more than on the odd race day.

I have it on good authority with the HRM strap that came with the FR620 was given a life of 365 hours of use, ie 1 year at an hour a day. I'm on my 3rd strap in 4 years so that would seem about right, maybe a bit short. The old straps had a snap on pod so you can get a new strap on eBay pretty cheap that is compatible.

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
