Good point Dillthedog57, are there any 'normal' Fetchies that have had success with Hadd e.g. 4-hr+ marathoners?

Yup, 6 failures at sub 4, then did Hadd...3:49 then 3:34, and took 9 minutes off my Half time too. It's amazing what happens when you increase your mileage from 35 to 70 mpw, without getting injured !

Hi Teknik, are you preparing for a spring marathon? It’s a shame they have stopped the Tuesday Serpie sessions. I was looking forward to using those for sharpening in the new year.

Dillthedog57, it’s not for everyone. As you read the Hadd document he starts with the observation that most people don’t convert well from shorter distances to longer. Certainly when I started Hadd I had a slower marathon time than you but a faster half time. Your conversion to marathon is pretty respectable.
Having said that there’s a strong relationship between mileage and performance and I find Hadd is a good way of building miles while staying relatively injury free.

Hi Puzzler, I haven't managed to run a marathon since 2013, due to a mixture of "life events" and a large dose of CBA. I hope I'll run a Spring marathon (not booked one yet), and I'm currently signing up to every Serpentine session I can, just to get me out the door and up to 50+ mpw.
If you want a weekly sharpener there's still a Tuesday session (uncoached) in Bermondsey, or the coached track session at Paddington (Maida Vale).

stuart little
Dill it's a great question, and my take on it is that Hadd is an excellent way for faster folk to manage an extended lydiard base phase without demolishing themselves, and I use many of the Hadd HR principles to manage the quicker runners I coach.
With the 4h ish marathoners I coach, I tend to find they lack the skill to run with good form at the paces required by Hadd, and so have them run at low RPE values instead of by HR to achieve similar effects but at slightly quicker paces.
If memory serves, Hadd advocated something similar with a suggestion of not worrying too much about HR until folk were running at 8:30s or thereabouts (but I may be very wrong on this point!)

Teknik, being devils advocate, your HM time indicates a slightly better marathon time than 3:34. I believe the experts suggest something in the 3:15-3:20 range?
stuart little, could you expand a little on the 8:30s, is that running 10 miles at a low HR at 8:30 pace, or running 50+ miles a week at an average of 8:30s or less?

Fenners yes indeed that would be true - I was aiming for 3:30 in the last attempt. If this cycle goes well and I get to the start line I hope to nab a GFA 3:20.
Stuart the slow running / form point is Hadd's comment about not bothering to run more slowly than 5k pace + 3 mins. Most of my running is way slower than 8:30s (but not slower than 9:30 which is 5k +3 for me).
