Round up time.
Since John (but not Lazarus Kane) on Wed 13th I have seen
On 14th Life (again) in St Albans. They were supported by the excellent Fiende Fatale - initially I thought the singer (Matt) was a c*ck but warmed to him and the band and by the end was decided to see them again; they have some stuff out in February. actual review: cultureandpolitics.org/2017/10/31/review-of-fiende-fatale-live-at-the-horn-st-albans
Life were ace, just a joy to watch and Good for your Health.
I had Friday off to attend a Watford Joggers quiz night
Saturday was The Wedding Present at the Boileroom. They were pretty decent, but Gedge has that air of someone who knows they should have been bigger than their cult status. Well if he will name records after Man United players......
Wednesday & Thursday saw me and Joopsy jumping around like children to Canadian punk wonders Pup, not once but twice. Wed support was "Nervus from Watford" who made a decent racket and sang about police brutality and said "sick" a lot; worth a visit despite all the above.
Thursday we were joined by Hendo (who was so excited to be there that he took over an hour to get a "quick bite"), Mrs Joopsy and youngest mini-Joopsy; Mr J was head and shoulders the most excited of us all despite it being a second show on the spin. Support from Fresh and Slotface was worth the money alone. Fresh were so happy to be there. Slotface are from Norway so it was hard to tell. Pup - brilliant - like a blinding white light held in front of my face for eternity. Pup were great, but I torn being watching the band and the madly happy faces of Joopsy and Hendo in the moshy mosh pit.
There was a chance to see Pup again on Friday in Bristol but I declined needing a rest and still nursing my month long cold. and because on Saturday...
...we went to see Fontaines DC at the Leadmill.
The support was Drag Music, excellent banging noises but disjointed singing from a Bonnie Tyler lookylikey in a leather jump suit swaying like a cheap pole dancer who was older than your mum. Frankly I would have preferred seeing a Buck Fizz tribute band.
Fontaines eventually turned up. The singer Grian (Irish for Brian I think) makes it all work, he paces the stage like a caged animal, has all sorts of ticks and, occasionally, roars like a demon. The sound was rubbish except for the slower songs and the riot of Big. Overall I felt the band looked tired and disinterested and they made no effort to connect, which after the love from Pup etc was a contrast. Or maybe what I saw reflected my inner self, I was tired and muffled from a cold. The 7-8 round drive didn't help. Yet compared to a similar band like The Murder Capital they lacked the intensity needed to carry off their fine album.
Thinking back over all the shows I have seen in October and November what stands out for the most is the happiness that emanates from bands that love what they are doing, where they are and that people actually want to see them and get what they are about. It is so hard to fake and moody bollocks doesn't make up for it.
Here ends the lesson.

Great round up chief. I think the singer lass from Fresh and the bassist lass from Life are two of the happiest people I have seen on a stage. Oh and that fat dancer/keyboard lad in Nervus from Watford.

Nice round-up Chiefy. I decided an hour-and-a-bit each way was too much for Fontaines, so I admire your dedication, although based on that feedback I'm happy with my choice!
Agree that the band obviously enjoying doing their stuff makes for a great gig. It's why Feeder last week was one of the best gigs of the year.

In contrast to chief I would have happily driven 3 hours each way just to watch Grian, fascinating stuff.
