Why aren't more runners interested in orienteering? Those who try it seem to get hooked pretty quickly so what is it that's stopping more taking the plunge? Is it really so daunting, don't they like the variable distances or are they worried that PBs will not be obvious as they are with those runs on fixed routes (which in my opinion I would find pretty bring pretty quickly). Are they just in their comfort zone and nothing will shift them? Something else I'm missing. I'm seriously considering kidnapping a few and only releasing them after they've done at least a blue course. |

did my first orienteering event last Saturday and it rocks! A bit like a confused fartlek. Tagging my card, looking at the map, sprinting off across the landscape in search of a flag. Wicked! Doing another tonight. What's more ... the children love it too. |

a couple of people that I hill run with are quite active in the local orienteering club and I'm tempted - I took the kids along to one of the events a while back and they enjoyed it (as did I) but I've never done one of the adult courses as yet. I'm getting pressure to go to this though which is near where I live purple-thistle.co.uk sounds fun ![]() |

Not as far as I know... would be bad form anyway. Not sure it would help much though to be honest, the maps don't have grid squares. And would certainly defeat the point.

Looks good Llama... just try to refrain from doing the Mighty Thistle if you haven't done any orienteering beforehand, it will be a technical area by the looks of it! ![]() I think thats the White Rose weekend else I'd be tempted too. |

it's funny Roo, I don't think my stamina is an issue so would be tempted to go for the Big or Medium Thistles, but I suspect my technical ability leaves a lot to be desired judging by my efforts on the kid's courses. I'd probably be out there all day ![]() What's easier, running on open moorland or running through a forest? I guess I'd only do the one day and take the kids for the other one. |

Did my first O at the weekend -Swaldale Marathon.(well its an O to me) Bought an OS map a couple of days before, marked of all the check points and self clips and studied it hard thinking I'm going to get lost here. Map never came out of the back pack ! Good experience though Think the chevy chase in a few weeks may be different ![]() |
