Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

Okay guys

Daddyshark and I are playing and basically I'm killing the game. I can see he has mate in about 3 moves if I let him out of check.

I've offered a draw but am I being unsporting by not trying to win ?

Ps. Sorry Daddyshark :-)

It’s a game with clear rules, you are definitely correct to force a draw by perpetual check if you’re otherwise losing :-)

Part of the job of winning is to prevent your opponent doing this.

Draw by repetition is a fun way to upset an opponent who has an advantage over you :-) I’m sure DS would take it in good spirits.

Finding the perpetual is sound play.

DS might have broken a few plates after realising what had happened though ;-)

Open apology to all my matches. We've been up the Glen taking a group of Scouts on a hike and overnighter and there's no phone signal up there (which is really nice, actually ;) ). Back to play now. Just as well we were on a 48 hour turn round...

I did find it funny that Gobi's longest thinking time for a move was deciding whether to kill the game.

BTW technically perpetual check isn't a draw but will end up a draw via same position repeated 3 times or no pawn moves for 50 moves (assuming a draw isn't agreed beforehand).

I’ve been asked by a random opp if we’ll play an under 1300 match against his team.

I’ll post it up in a few days’ time & let’s see what happens.

I wonder what would be the consequences of banning repetition? Someone must have considered it. Of course it would be challenging to do in practice on non-computerised games. But you could ban draws entirely…and have games lasting for thousands of moves (millions? billions? trillions?) until someone runs out of new positions.

Hmmm….maybe not such a great idea :-)

Still have the 50 move rule? But having repetition saves a lot of time...
