Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Collared dove on the grass - never seen one in my garden before. There's been some starling activity in the trees out back the last few days too, which isn't normal.

Collared Doves were regular , almost daily in my garden until about eighteen months-two years ago and they are now only very occasional.

Hello birdwatchers, I wonder if you could help me with an id? My local river tends not to have any birdlife. No ducks, swans, geese etc (saw a heron a couple of times, that's it). But last week there was a bird I did not recognise. It was small and round (closer to a sparrow than a duck, say) and black with a white circle around the eye. It was sitting on a rock, then dived off and swam underwater. Any ideas?

Thanks. Similar shape, but differently marked. Possibly even shorter of tail.

Not a ring ouzel - they are migrants and leave in September, plus they behave a bit like an upland version of a blackbird, so no swimming!

AFAIK dipper is the only UK passerine that actually swims. Maybe it was a juvenile hence the different markings?
