Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

There was a chiffchaff in the bush outside my back door this morning making a load of noise for ages. I’ve heard them before but this is the first time I’ve got a really good look at one.

Driving out to Yarmouth today, big flocks of lapwings in the half-drowned fields by the road. I'd love to have been able to stop, but the Acle Straight is a notoriously dangerous road!

At work on Friday my colleague nudged me to look out of the window and said “Is that a kid in the lake on a paddleboard?”. It was a cormorant on the aerator.

There's some sort of raft of barrels stretching right across the River Tees just below the Barrage. The other week there was a cormorant on each one from bank to bank. Many, though not all, with wings stretched off. A very curious little sight.

Cormorant feathers aren't waterproof so if you see birds with their wings outstretched they are drying off their plummage

Never knew that. Think I've normally thought they were catching the sun to generally heat up rather than dry off.

We've been out with friends walking today and discussed cormorants drying themselves then. One of my friends suggested something I didn't know about long tailed tit but I need to check and confirm
