Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Still some martins in Co. Durham.

Saw a few little egrets in Rossmere park, Hartlepool - was surprised but according to Wikipedia they're naturalised in eastern and southern England and Ireland.

A single Swallow over the river this morning was only my second local one this year! Lots of suitable feeding areas been urbanised bit by bit around here.

Running home today and there were a bunch of people crouched down on the towpath and waving me to a halt. Initial thought was some kind of medical emergency, but no, they were shepherding an elephant hawk moth caterpillar off the path into the vegetation. An absolute beauty, a good 6-7 cm long. Not sure I've seen one in the wild before.

Two dippers too :-) but all the swallows seem to have gone.

We had either two or the same one twice elephant hawk moth caterpillars in the garden in the last couple of weeks. It was hacking across the patio so I put it back into the plants.

They will be looking for some loose soil or leaf litter to pupate in. I think they overwinter as pupae.

On the west coast of Scotland near Torridon and pleased to see swallows here still. Nothing much else to report bird-wise, apart from common gulls, as mentioned recently - not common where I live but more so here. Did see a shrew trotting along a verge yesterday evening, which is always nice.
