Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Very jealous of some fabulous spots on here. Especially the swifts. Still yet to see a single one actually over our house. Would also love to see a barn owl.

Heard some strange noises last night, not sure, but if insomnia strikes again will be trying to go through the apps and find out.

Great fly past by a curlew on our river walk tonight.

Found a pool by our house that I knew was there, but didnt realise you could walk to the edge of. (Path is off a roundabout that doesnt have a path around it?!)

But plenty of birds. Lapwing, reed bunting, swallows, swifts, swans with 5 cygnets, moorhens, coots, tufted ducks. And saw ringed plovers in the field by the house when we walked past.

And the mouse was back and let me get very close and get some better pictures tonight.

Big flock of House Martins feeding over the house this evening, That's the first time this year. None of the nest sites close to the house have been occupied this year and there seem to have been a lot less in the general locality so it was great to see such numbers.

Sorry for the rubbish picture but can anyone help me identify this little bird I saw on the beach this morning? It’s very rare to see any bird other than a gull or corvid on the sand.

Markings were quite thrush like, but it was much smaller. I’m thinking possibly a pipit? But it seems like the wrong environment

Difficult to decide between Rock and Meadow Pipit from the photo but head patterning looks more like Mipit. Rock Pipits don't normally have any distinct head pattern, like the white line below the eye visible here. Underside patterning also looks too sharp for Mipit. I can't really make out the leg colour which often helps with the differentiation, Mipits are orange-pink, Ripits are red-brown/black.

Thank you again DT :-) I've zoomed in on my photo and looked at a Youtube video that shows meadow and rock pipits and I think you're right. It was down near the rockier end of the beach, so the right environment for it.

That's a first for me of any pipit.

My two baby herring gulls appear to be doing well.

Scribbs just as an aside rock pipits turn up all over the coast and meadow pipits although associated with moorland, heaths etc in summer migrate to lower ground and coastal fringes in winter. Some proper hard meadow pipits will over winter ‘on the hill‘ so to speak. I used to see the occasional one on Beamsley Beacon above Wharfedale well over 1000 feet above sea-level in winter

Next time I see one I'll pay more attention to its legs. I had to snap this photo quickly as there was someone walking along the sand with their dog nearby and I suspected the bird would fly away - which it did just after I took the pic.

Every day is a learning opportunity and this is a lovely place to ask questions about birds.
