It didn’t sound or move like a kite if truth be known. It didn’t seem like a buzzard either. It was sluggish but not particularly powerful looking; like one of those old-school Soviet turbo-prop bombers

DT looks like there a number of Ospreys back in the UK at their nesting sightings with quite a lot expected imminently ukospreys.uk so they will be moving north at the moment. Severn Trent have officially closed the Res here and though in reality access to the path network is still possible on foot it means the local sightings fb page and website have understandably shut down to discourage visitors coming from afar. Which means unless I spot any transient Ospreys from the house or whilst out running I'm not getting the usual heads up. They frequently use the trout fishery here as a service station/b+b during migration. They've put up nesting platforms to try and persuade them to stay but without success so far. The Canada Geese do seem to find the platforms useful for nesting though!

Yes DT, they seem to largely follow the Derwent up through Derbyshire, visiting the various feeding opportunities on either side of the valley. In previous years I've seen a succession of sightings on a single day of what appears to be a single bird as it moves north/south through the county along the line of the valley.

They go up Wharfedale too in spring. There’s a group of ‘spotters’ use the car park at Barden Scale - ace viewpoint with opportunity to see several raptor species

Heard 'my' songthrush as I was running along the beach this morning. Obviously has a favourite spot to sing from. Thanks Derby Tup for helping me identify this one.

Happy, a merlin in one's garden is, I would say, a fabulous thing. We have a decent range of birds in our garden but merlin will never be one of them!

G have a look at kestrel. Unless you are really somewhere quite wild a merlin is an unlikely garden bird
