Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Started watching it. Poorly controlled. Nobody is any wiser for any of it. Switched it off after about 15 minutes.

I don't work for this company, but like I mentioned before, it seems companies like this have been moving functions and resource south under the radar. They are claiming material uncertainty is the root cause. I can't fault that reason.

From that article by Robert Peston linked by Boab:

*****************
Mr Nish [Standard Life's chief executive, David Nish] insisted Standard Life has "a long-standing policy of strict political neutrality and at no time will we advise people on how they should vote".

[....]

I [Peston] am told by informed sources that unless a formal monetary, regulatory and currency union were agreed by an independent Scotland with the rest of the UK, which also included some kind of compact on taxes, Standard Life would feel obliged to move both funds and people to England.
******************

That's either pretty unpleasant gun-to-head-holding by Standard Life, or similar style by BBC that's not SL's position.

Of all the reasons to vote for or against, whether it inconveniences some massive financial corporation's ability to make quite as much money as normal shouldn't come very high on the list.

"similar style reporting by BBC if that's not SL's position"

"Of all the reasons to vote for or against, whether it inconveniences some massive financial corporation's ability to make quite as much money as normal shouldn't come very high on the list."
^ and this

There were plenty of the exact same noises being made before devolution in 1999 as well. But when it comes to the crunch nobody goes anywhere. Standard Life and it's likes (financial companies) are not scared of uncertainty, no matter what they say. They are scared of the almost certain outcome that they will face proper regulation in an independent Scotland. So they might move their brass plate to London, but there remains business to be done in Scotland and they're not going to pass that opportunity to someone else.

And in the big picture - if we lose one company but gain greater social equality and democracy then I've only one message for Standard Life : "Goodbye!"

One thing they might want to consider is the number of Scottish customers they'll lose if they do move simply because we vote for independence. Have they "costed" that?

I just hate the daft way numbers are (mis) used in news reporting. And the BBC is supposed to be one of the better ones. "90% of its customers are in England..." That's because 90% of the UK population are in England. If a UK company has 10% of its customers in Scotland then it has an exactly proportionate breakdown. Argh!

I bet Belgium and France or Switzerland and Germany or any other 2 countries who are neighbours, with a common language don't have this problem. Can you imagine UBS not being able to service German customers and corporations, just because its headquarters are in Switzerland, not Germany? No. It's just not an issue. You site your head quarters wherever makes sense against numerous criteria. You have your customers in whatever countries you then choose to operate in, based on other, often completely different criteria. It's called Global Commerce. Sheesh. :-)G
