Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I deffo won’t be investing a lot I was thinking £500 maximum as I’m definitely not a gambler with money to risk losing !! (I’ve an 18 year endowment policy maturing in May ) so as well as taking out another I thought I’d also risk say £500 on a Crypto currency

I got a bit carried away with this a few years back, kicked on by the last boom. Ended up putting in about £3000 in Eth and some other altcoins (this was when Eth triggered hundred of made-up con cryptos - librarycoin for the library crypto use case, etc!). I can't say why I never bought bitcoin - just my contrary nature :-)

I bought after the ATH (all-time high) of that time and still within months I was 75% down. Ended up selling the shitcoins and left myself with 2 eth, which went down to £75 each at one point. Kept the Eth until this summer (ironically!) when it went back up to about £275. I was just done with it and sold. Maybe I lost 50% overall in the end? Of course, if I'd kept those I'd have made my money back but there's only so much your nerves can take and you can't predict when this stuff hits the news again :-)

I would say that I found the whole crypto world pretty fun and crazy. It's far from legit though to people used to trading in Vanguard or other established brokers. People get scammed all the time, you can lose it just because your hardware wallet provider puts out shit software, or your exchange gets hacked. It's amazing how many time Coinbase happens to go down just when there's massive gains to be realised and just extracting it back into sterling can be far from simple. It's very much the wild west of finance but seems to be getting better.

If it all crashes again in future and I had some spare money, I might go in again but bitcoin and eth are really the only true games in town long-term it seems. Everything revolves around them. If bitcoin goes up it seems the entire crypto market goes up with it. Elon Musk can make a throwaway comment and you gain or lose huge percentages.

The one thing that always intrigues me is, when I played through the "Bitcoin is 1000% in a month" stories... How many people can afford to sit there and got "Nope, not selling at 200% gain, 300% still nope, 700% nah, I want more than 1000%!" Good for those people but they a lot of spare dough or balls of steel :-)

Like with any investment, for it if you can afford to lose it. Just thought I'd share some thought and gives a story where someone didn't get rich from it. Many thousands definitely lost a lot more than I did.

This is a great podcast about one crypto story: bbc.co.uk

The only predictable thing about Bitcoin is every time there is a new peak, the media wheel out the story of the chap in Newport, Gwent who threw out a hard drive allegedly containing 7500 Bitcoin and the same chap from Newport Council is wheeled out to say "No, we don't care how much it is worth, we aren't digging up the landfill site".

Looking at Bee and Pi they appear to just generate apps to gain hits and then earn money from ads.

Some at work do it. I didn't know you can buy shares of a Bitcoin. I have noticed Bitcoin has gone up about £7000 in the past week.
