Baz P, I do not think that speed is the issue with the sub 2:40. From recent form you definitely have the speed, it is the endurance for the last 6. In the build up to breaking 2:40 I did two marathons as 'training' runs. On each the objective was to go out slow for first 13 and pick up hard for last 13.

I am confident this is what helped for me, and entering a marathon as training is great fun, no pressure, catered course, and on the last 13 you are continously chasing folks down. I did it this year at VLM, and I can say without a doubt it was the most enjoyable marathon I have run.

Absolutely I agree with PS. Good mate and training partner of mine, Hayley Munn ran 2.40 (and a few seconds) from a 78 min maxed out half marathon - but she was really marathon specific in her training.

I hope you've recovered from your trampoline injuries baz.

Psimon - I like the sound of doing a marathon with no time pressure - am I right in assuming that you mean doing such a marathon within your marathon training schedule or would doing it say in the spring for an autumn 'A-race' marathon work well too?

Clairevmc, I was in fact referring to doing as part of spring build up to spring marathon. My goal marathon this year was Edinburgh and I used VLM and Halstead as a no pressure training run. I have found it difficult in the past to do a fast finish long training run, however at London and Halstead, I reaped the benefit of starting fairly easy and then chasing people down in the second half with the crowds giving an extra lift. One has to be disciplined though, at London in particular, I could have easily got sweeped away with the pack at the beginning and thus had to keep myself in check.

Poor half for me today. Finished in 1:20:48 after a couple of weeks of poor training. Hopefully that's the boot in the bum needed to get back to it properly for the rest of summer.

Hopefully Daviec, a bad one always seems to give you that motivation to do better.

Good weekend for me, finally broke the 5 minute barrier in the fetch mile, not quite marathon training though :)

thanks for the post si, makes sense and i can see how that would help in the run up to an A race marathon.

finally nailed a sub 2 hr 18 mile training run yesterday. Its something i do every now and then to see where i am and before ive managed 2:01. set off way to hard though and felt it in the last 4 miles which was into a slight head wind. pleasing, and i may try that again later on in the training schedule. easier today tho :)

Just looked at the stats from my race yesterday and I gave up at 10 miles. HR goes down dramatically with each mile from the level I know I can hold for a half. I could probably have taken a minute of that time with the right mind set.

Baz, that's a cracker of a run!

Well done on a sub 5 mile Chris. I'd love to do that. Was running at sub 5 pace for a wee while yesterday but it says down a serious hill :)

57.5 Degrees of Pain
I have signed up for the new Moray marathon in September. Incentive is whisky for prizes. After a summer of Ultras the endurance will be good, and I'm still trying to get sub-18 at a parkrun for speed, but will likely equate to another 2.54-2.58 performance rather than any real improvement.
