Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Electric car anyone?

We need to remove the VAT cost differential between public chargers 20% and domestic 5%. Its discriminatory to those with not ability to install chargers at home - which may tend to be lower earners.

HappyG(rrr) wrote:Solar panels + battery are about a 5 year payback. If you are prepared to stay in a house that long or if you think it will add value if you are selling, then it's a no brainer. Interest free loans from gov't are available in some areas so you don't have to find the capital. Or some installers do a "pay monthly" option, albeit with an interest charge, so costs you a bit. Wrong thread, obv! EV, saving is (depending on what baseline figs you use!) £200 pa per 1,000 miles. If you do high mileage like me, that's £3000 for 15,000 miles per year. Adds up pretty quickly as a saving. So I am prepared to use my savings, or take out a low cost personal loan, to fund the extra up front cost. G

I would only save £900 a year if I could home charge exclusively as my Mondeo is good on diesel, I am tempted by lease as I do want to move to an EV but atm, the extra monthly outlay and lack of anything to show for it at the end is a no go. As such, until second hand prices are low enough (6ish year old vehicles as that would be my market in ICE too) , I'm probably out of the market.

I think most/all points been covered as to why EV tale up is (possibly) an issue.
Not sure if it's exactly been covered, but there is a massive part of market it just isn't a viable option for (yet this may or may not changed).

Home charging not available and a budget normally of sub £5k or even stretch that to nearer £10k.
£5k gets you a lot of ice car that is perfectly reliable and convenient and will last user a number of relatively low cost motoring years.
Covered:
Charging network needs more and standardised (I want to fuel my car I go to ANY station/any brand and pay easily).
New price premium.
Second hand prices nearer parity good on one hand, however such fall offs in value that has got them there will (fairly) scare many from purchasing EV for the (not unreasonable) fear of residuals.
Non home charging prices generally seen a fair rise in rates in short few years (will that only get worse!?) we have seen other industries lure you in then prices go up up up.
Range anxiety as such I think has largely wained, BUT the network not being as easy to operate and the time to charge and need to plan constantly I think there is still a form of range/use anxiety.
As irrational as some (many) here may find it there is a section of car society that enjoy/like cars (ice cars) the noise/the smell the package. EV is well like some form of white goods.
The motoring industry are still spending in some cases large sums on alternative power sources so that adds some uncertainty.
I think the wider demographic is different to the fetch demographic.

In summary the EV option is more expensive, less convenient and dull to number of buyers yet I believe.

I think there's no question that an EV is currently something of a luxury purchase for most people. It certainly was for us. Previously, I'd always been at the bargain end of the market (5k was my max spend), but we decided to spoil ourselves for a number of reasons.

As for dull, I think my EV is much nicer in several ways to the petrol version of the same car that I drove on holiday. It was that rental that got us thinking about the EV in the first place, it was nice enough to drive, but the EV is streets better. They aren't low-powered mobility scooters any more! Of course other viewpoints are available. As the prices drop and charging structure improves, they will continue to gain in popularity. I can't imagine the circumstances in which I'd change back.

I probably wouldn't have got an EV if it wasn't a company car. I wouldn't have paid that much for a new car (I don't think I would buy *any* new car, they are a LOT of money!) and my feeling is that the fast development of better EVs means I wouldn't have wanted to buy a second hand EV. That doesn't mean I don't like my EV; I do, so far. I would get another in 4 years when the time comes for a new company car. Who knows where we'll be with them in that time, though.

I think as well as range anxiety we have redundancy anxiety For 2nd hand EVs. As an owner of a second hand EV I was a bit nervous, but the car is running perfectly fine. 2nd hand value have fallen and it's a little annoying that I could have got it cheaper if I'd waited a bit.

As EV sale targets creep up over the next few years there are fines of 15k for every ICE car sold over the quota. That will find it's way into the price and I dare say have some influence in the market.

I'm looking forward to buying second hand. With prices having come way down, will be able to get much nicer model than I thought I'd be able to afford. Just a bit overwhelmed with choice! :-) G
