I've just watched episode three, and things continue looking gorgeous. There's some lovely ships sailing to a certain place which looks absolutely marvellous. The plot is thickening nicely, although at a steady rather than brisk pace. Nice to meet a significant father and son, although wondering what Elrond is up to as MIA this episode.

I'm finding it very uneven, hoping all the strands come together and make sense soon.

I've finally caught up.
Pluses are it looks beautiful; Galadriel, Arondir, Elrond and Nori are all well played. Action sequences done quite well, but could do with more of them. Negatives are it's a bit slow and the antic caperings of hobbits and dwarves can be quite wearing. I'm not completely sure who "the stranger" is but that strand of the plot is becoming a bit tiresome. All in all, I think I will stick with it as there's lots OF pre-LOTR Tolkien strands that I dimly recall that I'm hoping to see realised on screen.

Overall I am enjoying it. Elrond seems a little camp and doesn't chime with how Hugo Weaving plays him. Galadriel was annoying in the first two episodes but I am now starting to warm to her. Dwarves are just being dwarves. For some reason I am not too keen on the half-foots (or whatever they are called). I am not entirely convinced with Lenny Henry doing his role nor the Irish accents.

Harfoots. I don't much like the twiddlydee Oirish accents that the production has given them but other than that they're fine for me. I think Lenny has been really good.
Elrond is about 3000 years younger than during LotR. At this stage he is a relatively young and inexperienced Elf who hasn't seen much of war or conflict, or been in a leadership position amongst the elves. By the time Hugo Weaving takes over a lot has happened and his responsibilities have changed him.

The Oirishness of the Harfoots annoys me too, as does the Scottifying of the dwarves. However, the Harfoots are about where Tolkien tells us they should be in the Prologue to LOTR and fit in with the "Wandering" he describes there. I think the elves are pretty good, though feel Galadriel should be taller. Episode 4 is worth watching for the first few moments alone, but generally fails to get us any further along beyond some predictable mining events in Durin's patch. Halfway through the series I really wish they'd start getting somewhere rather than multipling mysteries and delaying action! Who is the falling star guy? And Adar? And Halbrand? Where is Sauron? Everything still looks lovely though...

I have a very strong suspicion on the identity of the Traveller who fell from the sky. Really hoping I am correct!

I shall not comment directly on who I think the Stranger is because I think it could be one of three or possibly more men. However, I read on a Tolkien website that the "Wizards" were effectively angels that had been sent to Earth by someone - I forget who. So I think it's going along those lines. he ain't Superman, I know that much.

It's Saruman. Or Gandalf. Or Sylvester McCoy. That one.
