Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Yeah, but surely the greater the efficiency, the less area required to generate the same amount of power.

For example, if you've a limited amount of area to put them in. Or more power for the same area.
Depends what your individual needs are, I suppose.

It's factored into kWh per kWp (panel!) - and includes roof angle, degrees off south etc.

Complicated shit, this :-)

But my point was, all other factors being the same, the higher efficiency panels give more power for the same area.

But whether that is more power per £1 spent is a different calculation.

Yes

"

And Yes.

But Chris' original Q was how does that affect how much energy was *stored* in a theoretical battery.

And that also strongly depends on useage.

kWp = KW (peak) not panel - i.e. what's the theoretical peak power generated by that panel, assuming you get the maximum efficiency of the panel, before roof pitch, direction etc is taken into account.

South facing here so off to a good start (and Cornwall). Roof pitch, shallower better? Or is there a sweet spot?

But a rule of thumb, 800 x kW of solar panels = kWh per year. 4kW of panels (about 10 of the thinks) = 3200 kWh per year. Adding a battery makes it usable rather than can only use when generating.

800 multiplier depends on trees, roof direction and angle etc. I think the panels ate all about 22% efficiency now or something. £4k for 4kW and another £4k for a battery?

For project

Ben Laws had 6 batteries that were gifted to him from a nuclear submarine + solar panels + a wind turbine. Enough battery storage to run a washing machine, although you can also get manual washing machines. There is one designed for your bike. For heating he uses an open fire place and you might be able to generate more electricity from this (the biolite camping stove uses fire to generate electricity to power your phone). Also uses LED lighting.

Toilet - he had a large bucket to collect and then composted.

In terms of refrigeration, I found I didn't need to use one as I don't eat meat or dairy. When I got a lodger, I had to turn my fridge back on.

With regards to water conservation, sewage etc, presume you are using the permaculture methods?

As for the a*** of a neighbour, is there anyway to reconcile - maybe ask them for mediation with a 3rd party as there is enough shit in this world and would be much better if we had peace...... if that goes upside down, then should have a succession of Fetchie visitations ;)

p.s. do log everything your neighbour is doing as could be taken as harassment and intimidation especially as you are by yourself

RF thanks for all your suggestions. The puce suggested I log everything but at that time, I had to sit with a nitebook watching them pass my house, slowing diwn to a halt in front of my new entrance, having a good nosey from the car/truck/tractor/lawnmower/on foot, then pull up. Repeat. 39 times in just 2 hours and I gave up! I didn't want to become as obsessed as them!

Oh and Fetch, I have a surveillance camera and 3 security cameras... 50 metres of 6 ft fencing, gates, 20 metres of 4 ft fencing and 75 metres of rapidly growing prickly hedge... It does sort of keep them at arms length but the other day I found large foot prints in my garden, where I had been watering the plants! He is a pathological peeping Tom. Suppose he simply HAS to do it, watch me. While she is a control freak and insists she owns everything and everyone. Example: she watches walkers on the public footpath through their field. If they, for whatever reason, divert off the path she comes out and shouts at them!

About This Thread

Hi
I've seen environment (whether emissions, power, climate change, access to countryside, whatever you think of as "environment") discussed in various threads: Politics (obviously), the Electric Car thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/electric-car-anyone-61481/ , run free's excellent "Competitive Running and Keeping The Environment Clean" fetcheveryone.com/forum/running-competitively-keeping-our-environment-clean-60907/ my own Greta Thunberg thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/greta-thunberg---jfk-for-the-climate-generation-61044/ etc. but I haven't seen a general one.

So here it is. For those interested in the science, the politics, the action for (and I'll state that for me, this is mostly pro-environment, anti-emissions, anti-pollution etc.) and the hope for the future of our planet.
