According to this site rf, ferry is the best? (half the amount of CO2 per passenger per mile?) sustainabletravel.org Ferry is half that of train. Plan is the worst obv, over 10 times more CO2 per passenger than ferry and 5 times that of train? ![]() |

Ferry as a foot passenger is 18g CO2/km according to BEIS, but 128g CO2/km as a car driver. Although there will be significant variation depending on ferry age etc. Comparisons: Domestic Flight (inc internal Europe): 133g+121g secondary effects (altitude etc) = 254g CO2/km Long Haul: 120g+93g = 213g/km Car (single person): 171g/km Coach: 27g/km Eurostar: 4g/km So, on average not worse than air travel, but Eurostar by far the best. High Speed Rail in France will have a similar v low g CO2/km too. |

Hmm, some interesting food for thought there. The overnight ferry connects favourably with the TGV to my destination. There is the time element of the journey to consider too. I’ll look forward to planning out in due course. |

And why I drive and take the Eurotunnel when seeing my sister in the Netherlands. I can get there on 3/4 of a tank!

But is it better to drive 200 miles to Eurostar (the train from Cornwall simply isn't practical 4hours + journey or reliable - says someone with 17 years experience of it), or take a ferry 15 miles down the road?

Chris, exactly! I used to fly from Cardiff: negligible driving, train the other end... now I have to drive across the whole Southern UK and Northern Europe... But, it actually still is a LOT cleaner...

Eurostar wouldn’t be worth it for me, it’s a similar length journey to Chris to get to London and an overnight stay somewhere. Plus I’d need to cross London and Paris! Night Ferry and then a direct train from Le Havre seems like the best option. |

I’ve been looking at overnight ferry options to The Netherlands (from Hull) and back for a work trip in April. Flight (incl trains and taxis) £270 versus A/ Overnight Hull ferry £233 plus train £165 = £390 & extra 2 days travel for the train !! B/ Train all the way (sleeper plus Eurostar) = £600. Can be £350 if I sleep in a seat, but sod that.
