Loved the article. For me, a lot of the point of running marathons is that I know that I am likley to reach a point physically and/or emotionally where I will want to give up or walk. So what makes marathon so brilliant is that great challenge. I know I will overcome it but worry how hard it might be, so that adds to the excitement pre and during the race. After a marathon I always feel like a superhero for at least a week. |

I said to Mick the other day, and probably to other, Wazelle, that if I thought I was guaranteed to hit the wall I wouldn't do a marathon, but if I thought I was guaranteed NOT to hit the wall I probably wouldn't bother either. What would be the point?

I think believing that is at least part of the method to avoid hitting it, JB.

I know a lad who used to play rugby. If you kicked the ball over a wall he would take the direct route to get it back ![]() |

trouble is none of us know what is going to happen, or when its going to happen if and when ones legs or head goes, through what ever reason, - then all the talk in the world online isnt going to prepare one for it main reason being, - tis all too easy in life to give in - takes guts and a sheer want to survive to carry on |

The guy who came 3rd in this year's tokyo marathon has been hosptialised by his last 3 marathons (all of which were spectacular results followed by spectacular collapses after crossing the line). He was quoted as saying that he was fine with it andhe starts the races knowing that he's fine with dying out on the course because he's going to give it everything every time he races. ![]() |

I don't think I hit the wall in my first mara last year, just very tired and legs pretty mashed from about 20 miles. Some advice I'd been given online really helped me through the last 6 miles. As advised, I kept telling myself that after all the mileage and months of training I COULD run those last 6 miles and it worked for me. Just hope it works again in my next attempt ![]() |
