Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Ok, so i didn't manage a brick train as the rain is really heavy and its just awful on the bike but i did do a 4 mile run. Yes it felt good (i don't run much any more due to pelvic injury) but this may be due to running in the rain rather than no alcohol.
I enjoyed it though. Hope everyone is ok :-)

well done Finders, i have tried not drinking before races and it it makes not a jot of difference to me, but i think your stopping for doff reasons, i tend not to drink during the week, only really at weekend, couple glasses of wine to wind down on a friday and lot more if out on Sat. Yeah i could lose bit weight quicker if i stopped but i could also lose weight quicker i i didnt have my chinese every sat night, life is too short, i love running sure, but it's not my life.

Good luck with this Finders :-)

I've never been big on the alcohol, a history of an alcoholic father and two alcoholic stepfathers, one of them who died from it, provided much proof of how unpleasant it can be in extreme forms, so I drink only occasionally. However now it seems that due to stomach problems I'll have to give it up completely, at least until they figure out what's wrong with my poor tummy. So the only thing I can drink now is...well, water. No juices, fizzy drinks, no nothing. The question obviously is how to work this in the social life. I've got girlie drinks planned in couple weeks for my birthday for example, and I can only drink water. Is it fair to ask the girls to change the plans and do something else that doesn't revolve around alcohol. It is my birthday after all...right?

It sounds as tho you have the right balance Santababy. I enjoy drinking but know that its detrimental to my health to be drinking every evening. I'm not too bothered about the running, im just interested to know IF it would make a difference, but i woudl like to actually FEEL better in myself every day. I am guessing that my weight increases although i exercise daily BECAUSE i drink too much alcohol and i suffer with IBS dreadfully. I'm hoping this will help it.

Please don't anyone think that im saying drinking is 'BAD' an condemning those who do it...i woudl love to have the ability to take it or leave it, just like alot of you on here, but it has become a habit that i want to break :-)

if i was drinking every night i'd be worried about it too tbh. I do think its awful that some people pressurise others into drinking, i'm sure i've been guilty of it in the past though so i guess i cant say too mcuh, we all grow up though :)

I gave up drinking when I was training for my first marathon and it didn't really bother me. Don't think it makes much difference if you drink or not, only when you get to elite level. But good luck to you Finders, you will feel a difference I am sure. I found the more training I did the less I drank, if you really want to give up drinking all together you will.

You can't help the way you are ! You might find the more running you do the healthier your diet becomes.

About This Thread

Looks as though this thread has become popular again, here in 2010 (it's now 2024, and it started in 2008, so I think "ever popular" might be more apt! :-) G ) :-) Good Luck everyone.

A recent plea for those struggling to "reach out" as they say in US of A!

"Anyone not feeling strong and confident, please shout out. Or fmail. Or any other comms that works. Don't drink alcohol when you don't want to, for lack of someone to talk to. Pick up the phone, not the bottle."

Some acronyms, in case people use them:
JFT - Just for today
ODAAT - One day at a time
KIS - Keep it simple
TBOGUA - The Benefits Of Giving Up Alcohol (the title of this thread!)

New feature: article/blog of the month (period may change randomly!) Swittle's wonderful 14,611 days blog: (see links below)

Linking Joopsy's 17 year blog too, cos it's awesome!

There is a GREAT article summarising some of the benefits, to save you having to trawl through the thread (includes links to helpful apps and other resources).

And a great list of Alternative Drinks started by the lovely LindsD:

Please add to these articles and make them as valuable as possible! Thanks! :-) G

A great response from a health professional in Ireland responding to a question from a Guardian reader about why the warnings on alcoholic drinks that are coming in:

theguardian.com

"Alcohol is responsible for at least 1,000 cancer cases every year in Ireland, with one in eight breast cancer cases arising from alcohol use. Even one to two drinks per day increases the risk of developing cancer, and that risk is the same whether those drinks are wine, spirits or beer. Unfortunately, there is a very low level of public awareness that alcohol has been classed as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning it is carcinogenic to humans. That is why Ireland has passed legislation that provides for health information labels on alcohol products, including warnings about cancer, liver disease and the danger of drinking in pregnancy. It is unsurprising that the alcohol industry, which promotes its products with carefully crafted myths of good times for all, is objecting to the mandatory provision of facts (Anger brews in Italy over Ireland’s plans for alcohol health warnings, 12 January).
