Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Not really expecting advice, I just want to get this off my chest.

It’s 8 weeks out from Brighton Marathon and I’ve done virtually no training due to 3 weeks of flu and its after effects, plus several weeks of cold virus(es) before that, and before that I had PF.

There’s no sign of me feeling well enough to run at the moment and to be honest I really wish I didn’t have the marathon coming up as I don’t want the pressure of trying to get back to running. If it didn’t mean losing the £60 entry fee I would just pull out now.

I did pay for cancellation insurance but to claim that I would need a letter from my doctor, as I didn’t go see him when I was probably ill with flu, I don’t know if I’d get one as he would be having to take my word for it. Feeling fed up about the whole thing.

Get well soon Decorum.

Frag - how well do I know that feeling?!?! Might be worth calling the surgery and asking the receptionist for a phone consult - see if you can get advice over the phone on whether they would do you a letter. Failing that I would not advise doing the race, £60 is a loss I know but whether you DNS or DNF it's the same end result, unless you think there is chance you are still fit enough from before all this to "just get round any way possible" then you could go for it, but honestly I would suggest binning this and putting it behind you. Taking that pressure off really would feel good. Just my thoughts anyway and I know how you feel so ((hugs))

I take it you can't defer? Sorry you've had a run of ill health. My niece refers to it as being Pauline (poorly), which cheers me up whenever I feel a bit ill . . .

Would it be worth a trip to the doc's anyway if you're still struggling to fight things off?

Xpost with L10 - her suggestion of phone call is much more sensible than mine x

I would also suggest calling the surgery too to see what the situation would be re them issuing a letter. I hope you get what you need from them, but if not I think L10 gives good advice above. Not worth risking your health over - you can always defer (which I know means you'd have to pay again, but it would take the pressure off you now).

Thanks guys. I could defer but I’d only get 20% off next year’s entry fee. I should have known better than to enter a race so far in advance that I can’t easily get the majority of my money back for, but I was in a good place health wise last April.

I’m off to work soon so I’ll see how I feel next week (physically and emotionally) and call the surgery if necessary.

Frag, is it possible to sell your place on?

I finally got out on my bike today for the first time this year and will try a little run tomorrow. I haven't run for over a month now due to being lurgified before my holiday and bringing another one home with me. :-p My throat's still sore but otherwise I think I'm nearly back to normal, just a bit peed off that I've lost over another week of training.

I saw that Frg - ridiculously early, how would you know June whether you'll be fit for a marathon 8 months later?!
