Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

The statement is: "It is estimated around 5.7 million tonnes of cabin waste, including single-use plastic, earphones and food waste, is generated on passenger flights every year." This article goes on to talk about disposables being created from plant materials to reduce airline waste.... How is creating a disposable reducing waste generated by airlines. Replacing single-use plastic with another single-use is deemed reducing waste. How about creating items that can be reused over and over again.

Seems to be social conditioning by the media to get the public to accept manufacturing / transporting / managing waste of a single-use material over another single-use material.

Might offering a modest discount on fares in return for an agreement *not* to be issued with single use items help to raise the flying public's awareness of the waste currently being created?

I am aware you've been working hard on reusable bottles and receptacles. Gyms, sports facilities, office blocks and hotels might be credible targets - and labels on bottles showing plastic in landfill, with a message that buying a reusable bottle helps to reduce 'this'.

Hey all, just popping in with a question. We have been making ecobricks since the school asked for one per child in the summer. We now have about 9 1ltr bricks and nowhere to send them. I've looked online but nowhere seems to want them. The school isn't collecting now and I have nowhere to send them!

Hey Swittle - managed to get a hotel in Nice to change to reusable bottles :) Just wonder why more places continue with the same old practice.

It won't happen top down, I fear, run free, but the gentle 'drip, drip' [no pun intended] of requests by individuals will help to encourage people to open their eyes to new thinking and simple ideas.

FT Article on how broken recycling is:

Sustainability:
----------------
A growing "want" (consumption) has an impact on our world's resources. Historically we have gone through periods of frugality & eco-consciousness and always returned to the same apathy & couldn't give a damn about the environment we live in.

A linear economy means products head for the landfill. As landfills fill quickly, incinerators are now being put into place in the UK. Recycling is a broken system due to economics and incineration is simply the destruction of our resources.

The best would be for a circular economy and ways to close the loop.

Zero wasters care about their impact. On our journey to a zero waste lifestyle what are we willing to compromise on?

Resources for reducing landfill waste:

Freecycle: freecycle.org

or sell it on Ebay, car boot
Wrap: wrap.org.uk

How Stuff Works: home.howstuffworks.com

Food waste: consider composting. For cooked food waste have a look at Bokashi (FYI Anaerobic composting: http://www.alternative-energy-tutorials.com/aerobic-composting/anaerobic-composting.html)
