Your HR was up, I'm sure, running 15 secs for 100m will get them up, and if you could run that without your HR going up, you'd be a lot faster than you are (Did you see the times prescribed for different type of athletes in the book?!). If you're running all out, you aren't doing a Pirie session, you're doing strides or some other interval/rep session. It is not a maximal session. Pirie clearly states this in his book.
"Where high racing speeds are desired, hyper-fast runs are needed, to be followed by a generous period of passive recovery (even as much as 20 minutes). Note that this is not interval running, and a different set of rules apply."
Re the package comment, I was referring to your hour a week for training

Well, combination of longer runs and attempts at pirie intervals led to new 10mile pb today by 2mins, on much slower course than previous attempt and worse weather. Maybe pirie was onto something...

I'm giving the gerschler / pirie / schul type interval training another go as we head into winter.
Keeping to 100m to 400m at 5k paces with similar length intervals rolling on at marathon pace ish.
Just doing one or two a week.

Can we start again, or do I have to read it all?
NiNo said "Should interval or repetition sets be included in periods of base training, and what pace, intervals etc should be used?"
Slowboy said "No".
What happened next?

Got pointed in the direction of the pirie text, and tried to emulate some of the interval sessions described.
It was apparent that I wasn't training frequently enough to do these interval sets as part of an overall package.
I'm running a bit more now. Giving them another go as an experiment/for fun.
Been a few weeks now.
I've noticed quite an improvement in my beats per mile. Down from between 1050 - 1100 to 1000-1050.

I haven't tested my endurance - I'm not sure what you mean? Or how you would test it?
Still been doing same long runs so no problems there?

25 * 200m with 100m jog was your recent session, right? Still think you need to slow down your jogs, you're not getting enough recovery. How hard does the session feel? Are you dead after?
Does Schul advise something different?

You might be right. In fact I think you are. I should probably walk the interval.
For some reason I have it in my head that the interval should be continuous and a couple of paces down from the main effort.
I honestly didn't find the session too bad at all - I definitely wasn't dead and jogged 3.5miles home at an easy pace. Over the session hr was up to 160 and then down to 150ish. My max is 196.
