Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

That sounds scary nellers and worth checking.

I have on occasion had the wobbly feeling but without an HR spike ,usually when I have been running home from work underfuelled which I think is an explanation.

I have now paired my HRM Strap with the Optical HRM as I couldn't trust the data. I have now found my chest strap giving odd readings, starting very very high on most occasions before settling down 2 miles in and once it was way too low before getting to the right number. The high reading was different to the usual I have seen in mile 1 in that it was high as soon as I put the chest strap on. Maybe need to check battery, but think I replace dit recently

One word Nellers on why it hasn't happened before now. Age. Unfortunately as we get older we get more prone to EIVAs (Exercise Induced Ventricular Arrhythmias) assuming that's what it is. Over 40, and they get more likely.

Get it checked out, quite possibly it won't be too bad and won't stop you from training, but that's for a trained professional to tell you. I'm at the end point of one of these now (hopefully), where the echiocardiogram is currently being assessed , visually it looks fine, just hoping the computer (and cardiologist) says yes. They told me to continue training as hard and as long as I normally do while this assessment has taken place over the last few months. (For me it looks like anaemia was the culprit). But the GP should send you for bloods and ECG and will make his/her decision in your particular case on your particular history and symptoms. Take the graph along you generated, the GP said to me that would definitely be helpful.

Brand new query from me.

I put my optical HRM on the handlebars of my mike to function as a speedo. For much of the ride it still registered a pulse and a quite plausible level. My reaction was like WTF. it can't possibly be doing that? Can it?

And if not what kind of hocus pocus is generating a reasonable HR reading (130s)?

K5Gus asked a similar question having worn his optical on top of his winter gear. Being nosey I tried this and also got a reading. Spurious though it was.

A couple of weeks back I posted about similar (but different) where I wore mine over 3 layers of clothing, the outside one being a windproof fleece, and it was registering numbers in the ballpark, ie between 130-170.

My understanding of the way these work is that they shineg the green light, then sensors read the light reflected back. Therefore I'm assuming when not worn next to the skin but the green lights are shining ( ie in activity mode ) then whatever is reflected back will be interpreted by the algorithm and a number produced. So in your case the green light reflecting off the handlebars ??

Gus - yes it would have been.

So in other words spurious nonsense, but I would have expected to see a reading in the 130s/140s had it been on my wrist. So that's worrying that even with completely berserk/rubbish data, the Vivoactive is managing to look like it's got half decent data...

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
