Thanks Dtd, that was what I was thinking, but wondered if it was better for me to start lower even if comfortably sub-LT, or if the whole idea is to push the LT up from below if I'm better to have the sub-LT runs as close to LT as I can get?

The 80% comes from the Hadd document but is based on Joe's Hadd test as a starting point - 80% was assessed comfortably below his threshold. As DTD says if you don't have drift at 80% I would move higher (not necessarily to 85% which is quite a big jump). Obviously difficult to assess drift with wind/hills. I am doing mine around 83% at the moment. I have also seen recommendations to start these runs at 75% WHR which for me translates to slightly higher that 80% Max HR.

x post but I am a believer in pushing these as long as they stay below threshold.

Cheers Puzzler, yeah I'm not looking to cut corners just do whatever is best.
My plan is to do this until late Feb then add in some marathon sessions in the build up to London!

Seeing decent progress here but getting tempted by a couple of parkruns this week.
Did a last minute Christmas Day parkrun on Monday, and doing another on Saturday (this one is planned just to check progress), all the other mileage is at 70 or 75% though.
70% runs are now coming out close to 8 min miles which is nice, the lark run I did without an HRM (not cheating that way haha), in 17:45 on a pretty hilly course.
How are others getting on?

Well done brunski
I am gradually getting through the miles as well as shedding a few lbs in weight but pace improvement is hard to find. In fact this morning’s sub LT was slower for higher HR than I was doing two months ago! Could be a post Xmas blip but I was hoping for more by this stage.

Guess it could be a number of factors Puzzler, I know I've had the odd run that's come out slower than I'd expected to see but sleep, diet, maybe a slight virus could all play a part.
My main issue is my knees, they're creaking as it is (pretty sore after some runs), and I just can't see myself being able to add much mileage/time on feet to where I am now (around 8.5 hours a week and 60 miles).
My heart is starting to say yes, but my knees are saying no....oh to have found running in my 20's 😂

I have stuck pretty religiously to the plan through December, with 2 sub LT runs on Tues and Fri, and the rest at 75%. Now hitting 50 mile weeks as well, so things feel ok.
Brunski, my knees really sting after a cold run, even with long strides like this morning. But it passes after a few minutes, I'm a bit worried that it is a sign of things to come though. Puzzler, I have found that improvement comes in little bursts, often after what feels like going backwards, stick with it, the results will come.

Hi all apologies for the lack of posts in the past weeks. I have not been getting on very well (Brunski) due to my dodgy knee and sore ankles. So a couple of weeks ago I had a *whole* 5 days rest and achieved a whopping 18k mileage. Anyway the knee has started steadily to get better (phew) though not fully better (still sore for 400m at start of a run and not yet able to fully kneel or stretch my quad on that side).
And the sore ankles issue has been solved........ turns out I had done about 1200km road miles on my go to saucony hurricanes so they were not giving the level of protection needed for a chap of my age and running volume. New shoes bought, et voila - no sore ankles (this time saucony triumph). Can't have helped my knee either I guess, although I put the knee injury down to running fast 100s at track when generally fatigued due to high mileage - some sort of hyper extension strain.
Anyway last week I did 61k and this week 40 odd so far (with a day off on Christmas Day) so will be back up to 80k weeks soon. I do think my fitness has suffered as I have been seeing higher bpms during recent runs but I think I am getting back to where I was a month ago.

Happy new year all! Another good week on the way back to fitness for me with 70k volume including 2 runs of 20k ish. No runs particularly fast and a slippy Parkrun at moderate pace. Looking to establish a solid routine for January with slow mileage and sub-LTs. I may then do some hills in Feb in a Lydiard twist.
