Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

That's an interesting philosophical position, Surelynot. I'm sure there are many linguistic treatises centred on worldview vis a vis how a language names things, but the situation of someone, dependent on their individual ability to symbolically represent items, has that been adequately examined?

I think this is an area worth exploring, Dvorak. Just not by me.

Professor Lynne Cameron at the University of Birmingham has done a lot of work on Metaphor and its use in language - with metaphor being a much much bigger idea than it was presented as to many of us at school (ie: a metaphor is saying one thing IS another; a simile is saying one thing is LIKE another).

A huge percentage of our spoken language is metaphorical - "draw strength" for instance and the metaphors chosen by different languages don't necessarily translate from one language to another even when we have key metaphors for the same events/occurrences/feelings etc.

Someone asked further back "who decides?" about whether a noun is concrete or abstract and it's a really good question. I would say it's decided by testers in situations in which it's deemed essential to impose regulation on how language is used/understood.

I can draw curtains. But not with a pencil.

I've been known to draw inspiration and, occasionally, even attention.
