@flanker , interestingly we've started getting goldfinches coming back to the feeders again. They're always here, in large numbers, in autumn and winter, but in spring their numbers drop way off and we hardly see any for ages. I presume they are off trying to get more insect prey for their chicks, rather than the sunflower seeds on offer here.

it might be a quiet time for the birds but does anyone else have really loads of butterflies this year? So many of the more common: peacock, red admiral, whites, meadow brown, holly blue. But also plenty of marbled white, comma and fritillary. So good to see. |

a few less box moths this year. My constant war against them may just be paying off. Buggers.

Yes. We noticed this a couple of weeks ago and since had similar conversations twice more. We’ve not only noticed more but more varieties. I’ve got photos on my phone of cabbage white, red admiral, peacock, comma and a lovely speckled wood. |

Actually we're seeing, I would say, fewer butterflies than usual this year in the garden, but conversely a lot more other flying insects, pollinators. The flowerbeds have a constant hum. I've been noticing far more dead insects in the conservatory than usual, lots of hoverflies, for example. Judging by the squadrons of swifts going over the garden, there are clearly plenty of flies higher up too.

Definitely more butterflies and moths around here this year, and a greater variety

Decent butterfly year here. Currently lots of brown uns, Small Skippers, Red Admiral, Small Torts, 1 Painted Lady and a couple of Commas. Not seen any Peacocks for a while. Speckled Woods were plentiful, but seem to have gone. Lots of other insects too; a couple of Long Horned Beetles I haven't seen before in the garden, and a beautiful Burnished Brass Moth I found in the house. |

Actually, I just spoke to Mrs J2R and she reckoned there were at least as many butterflies around as other years, although early on there clearly weren't. She's the gardener and probably has a better eye for these things (she's carefully planted a garden to attract multiple pollinators).
