Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Not as good as your group KinkyS was my group of 5 Goosanders on the river a mile from my house. Three drakes. First of the winter on this stretch of water. Hi

I'm ashamed to say that having looked at the Collins Bird Guide again, I now wonder whether what I took to be flocks of Red-breasted Mergansers in Strangford Lough might actually have been Goosander instead. They were too far out for me to make out the markings clearly, but they had a sawbill profile. Would flocks of Goosander just off-shore in Northern Ireland in winter be likely?

I’d think more likely merganser than goosander in salt water. From memory they sit quite low in the water but not seen many

Winter distrib maps on the birdwatch Ireland site suggests more likely RB Merganser than Goosander (am I supposed to call these Common Meganser now?). Goosander seem pretty rare on the island of Ireland, especially as breeding birds.

Strangford Lough is mentioned as a "top wintering site" for RBM, "150 - 250 birds". Goosander says wintering only on freshwater.

The winter distrib map is to the right of the summer map; I had to swipe left to see it on my browser.
