I have half an acre of field and am intent on building a large run with a henhouse inside it. We have foxes here, so it will have to be completely covered. I am going to Google this omelet thing now...
My thoughts are to get light Sussex chickens. they are an ancient breed and apparently quite rare these days so I support a rare breed as well as have sociable chickens that lay eggs. Apparently they are good to eat too, but I am a vegetarian!
Idea is to get a cock and two or three hens.

We had a light Sussex hen and she was a great layer, giving really big eggs for her size.

One of neighbours took to sitting out with a gun when foxes got at their chickens. I thought he should have had a better coop. (It was open at the top)

Agreed, you have to have adequate fencing, and to shut the coop at night. I'm going to get a strand of electric wire round ours, for extra security. We lost almost all our chickens this summer and had to restock. Got mostly pekins now, which are quite cute, but I prefer bigger ones really.

I was very taken by a light Sussex trio today... They were gorgeous looking, seemed very friendly and I was told they are great layers being a vegetarian, having fresh eggs every day is rather good as they are a prime source of protein
I just looked at those Omlet things, goones gracious they are expensive...

You could probably make a house fairly easily Hann, if you've got a saw and a hammer

Mrs S yum!
Dr B, I am fairly good with my hands. I thought I'd order some 2x2 timber already cut to size and get the square fine mesh chicken wire and build a run. Buy a coop. I saw one in the local builders merchant. Doubt it will cost a lot...
