Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Any Fetchie (rock) climbers out there?

I'd be careful about exercises that develop grip strength too quickly - you could leave yourself open to tendonitis. Early on you probably will over grip and climb in a way biased towards your arms. It's probably worth just sticking to moderate graded stuff and accepting the pump for a few months, during which time you'll improve your technique and mental game, and importantly start beefing your arm tendons up. If then you still find you're getting pumped prematurely, or don't have the strength you want, maybe then look at some more focussed strength work.

Well I'm going climbing this morning so I'll try out the tips to put less weight on my hands and see how it goes! I'm not sure I could convince my fingers to grip less, but we'll see! :)

I would echo EB's advice about body position - even on an overhanging wall it is possible to support most of your weight through your feet. 'Knee drops' help (google for pictures of the technique), and twisting your body sideways into the wall. Experiment with different possitions and see which feel easiest - it'll soon become clear what helps and what doesn't.

And do intersperse slabs with overhangs etc.

Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely try out 'knee drops'. By the way I completed that route that I got cramp on and have been making progress :-)

ooh... hello!
I just found this thread (and group)... paul b introduced me to climbing (walls (so far ;) )) in August this year and I've kinda taken to it.
Looks like there's some good advice in here too... need all I can get at the moment! ;)

I'm very happy with my climbing progress, especially as I'm barely running at the moment. I think I'm slowly discovering technique, mainly from watching the very very (annoyingly) good people at the climbing wall. It's so fun though!

Went climbing with *Anj* yesterday at Bristol Climbing Centre... was wondering if there are any other Fetchie climbers within reasonable distance of Bristol Climbing Centre or the walls at Cardiff?
