What's your plan for Brighton, Johnny? Huge PB?

In 2009 I ran the Edinburgh to North Berwick 20, just coming in under the 3 1/2 hour cutoff, I ran the Edinburgh Marathon 3 weeks later and had a poor run. That was an extremely hot day though wth water shortages so no idea if I left a good performance out on the road at the 20.
In 2010 I did it again and ran a fast (for me) 3:07 at the 20 miler and struggled again at the marathon 3 weeks later.
Last year I purposely didn't run the 20 and had a great run at Edinburgh, PB'ing by 35 minutes.
All of this is specific to me of course and my general fitness was much improved last year so I may have run well at the marathon anyway.
I'm signed up for both again this year but I'm planning on doing the 20 as an LSR rather than racing it.

I've never ran one myself, but recall a comment from an acquaintance who suggested he valued racing a fairly hard (MPish) 20miler about 5-6 weeks out (I think) as a good psychological boost in marathon training. Alas I don't know what his times were like then, and whether he still does so - he seems to run and win marathons in training for target marathons now!

With my athlete head on I would never race a 20 miler, why leave a good marathon on the road somewhere at a distance nobody truly gives a shit about?
As a coach
Session as follows
5 miles @ MP + 60-90( time to get loose so start close to 90 and work down) 5 miles @ MP + 45-60 5 miles @ MP + 30-45
4 miles @ MP
1 mile however you like
1 mile cool down
The 1 mile cool down came into force as I discovered coaching nobody wants to back off at 19miles and look like they have blown up so we invented the go race the last mile and then do a cool down rule

I was thinking something along those lines for myself, oh Dark One. Most of my LSR stuff has accidentally got progressive, so I know I can probably do something like that.

Thanks Gobi, thats very useful. It will be a PB anyway as I have never done a 20 before.
Dee Gee- I always plan for a huge PB, just don't always get one I just hope to get closer to the times that my shorter races indicate that I should be able to achieve, if that makes any sense.
And , yes Wilmslow, do you want a lift?

That's a shame, 'cause I'm aiming for your current PB and was going to suggest we make a bus.

I've just typed in a whole load of stuff, and deleted it all - to summarize Gobi is right. I know this because I've been there and done it the "run races too quick" way and it was miserable.
20 milers tend to get saved for a change of scenery and some sort of mission as above ^^^

Mr. K.
I`ve tried Gobi`s 20M plan before - it`s great. One of the best bits of advice I have been given.
20 milers are great so much you can do with them.

I'm not doing it this year. Forgot about entering it, actually. I doubt I could fit it in now, realistically.
