Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Notes & Comments

The 2015 Brighton Half Marathon!

So the first big race of the 2015 season had arrived for me, and I was feeling good about it. I hadn't followed a plan per se but had taken the elements of a plan (steady runs, intervals, tempo, long runs) and just kind of made it up as I went along depending on how things fit into life. On top of that I was doing a good bit of cycling to and from work so was presumably building up my fitness that way also.

The week before the race I had taken it fairly easy, both on runs and cycles done, and also on booze drank - I barely touched a drop all week.

Me and Laura L woke up nice and early, and a hearty enough breakfast of porridge and banana, coffee, and toast was had. It was then off down to the seafront.

The weather was very cold, with a very slight breeze. But, it was dry and given the way the forecast was looking just a week ago, we gained a get out of jail card here.

The atmosphere was buzzing down at the pier, and apart from a little bit of a bottleneck when walking to the baggage area, and the starting pens not being very clearly marked, everything when very smoothly.

There was time for a decent warm up, and to take a place near-ish the front.

The gun and confetti went off and the race began. I felt that a pace I could keep would be somewhere around 7.20 and I made an effort to not go too fast in those first few miles. There was not as much course congestion as usual at this race and that certainly helped with the pacing. Everything was going great until around mile 10 when the pain really started to kick in. Turning the corner at Hove Lagoon slowed me down quite a bit, but I managed to grit my teeth and maintain my pace to the finish line and a big PB!

The Brooklyns and Bowmore were in full flow!
