I’m beginning to see that this would be tricky and probably not cost-effective, but is there a inventory of books physically on the shelves?

Depends on the shop how that inventory is held but yes.
There are different stock-holding systems. We had ours at Foyles linked to the website for a while but, like I said, it wasn't responsive enough to prevent orders being taken for things we didn't have and then were unable to get thus lots of refunds and unhappy customers. It is still connected but only for stock where there are multiple copies in stock. Plus they have had to turn off that part of the feed now as there are no staff in the shop to pick, process and pack the books and
I would assume small shops have a similar system with Hive but I have no idea how often it updates. I just don't think it will be cost effective or indeed possible for them to continue to provide a service without distributor back up.

I was given a Waterstones voucher for my birthday and thought I’d better get round to spending it before the end times kick in - it took me most of the morning, trying every so often, to get the site to accept order and payment. Am slightly wondering what will turn up. Their website must have been very overloaded, but what can they do at the moment?

I placed a Waterstones order early (c.07:00) this morning and it was fine - or as fine as the Waterstones website ever gets anyway.

Morning all. Thus far, for Bin't's choccie box extravaganza TBR-a-thon, we have TBR lists from
Dippers Owlers Peregrinators Little Nemo McG LindsCorp Dio Columba Wrigglers
though Columba did say she wasn't bothered about taking part as such but has provided a TBR list for interest.
Of those that expressed an interest, we still need TBR pile details from
Bint Chrisull Bazoaxe
Also on the offshoot thread, we have two more takers yet to offer up TBRs PaulaMc BarnonessBL
Please get your ducks in a row, your TBRs in a pile and your mood music set to Smooth Jazz FM.

I'll get on this asap. Mine will have to be Kindle choices - the only physical books I've had recently were given to me at Christmas and I've read all of those

I actually started Underland but was finding it a bit claustrophobic, so I put it aside for a while.
